Colobotea Lepeletier & Audinet-Serville in Latreille, 1825: 336 (original spelling). Type-species - Saperda cassandra Dalman, 1823 (Duponchel in D'Orbigny, 1846: 120). Colobothea Audinet-Serville, 1835: 69 (emendation).

The genus Colobothea Lepeletier & Audinet-Serville, 1825 is primarily South American in distribution ( Giesbert, 1979). Of the 117 described species, 21 are distributed in Mexico and Central America. Almost 50% of the South American species are known from the Amazon Basin and the Guyanas, with 21 species from southern and southeastern Brazil (Atlantic Rainforest), 3 species common to Bolivia and the Atlantic Rainforest, 2 species from central-western Brazil (Goiás), 9 species from Venezuela and Colombia, and 19 species from Peru and Bolivia.

Lingafelter (2004) was one of the first to document the amazing biodiversity of the Bolivian members of Colobothea . Our observations reflect this in that the dominant element is the Amazonian and Peruvian fauna but we have also documented 3 species ( C. emarginata ( Olivier, 1795) , C. rubroornata Zajciw, 1962 , and C. simillima Aurivillius, 1902 ) in the Atlantic Rainforest and Bolivia, most of whom are deposited in the Department of Santa Cruz ( Wappes et al. 2006). The present paper lists 24 species of Colobothea from Bolivia.
