Type locality. Leigh, New Zealand.

Etymology. Named for the collector, Richard Taylor.

Diagnosis. Antenna 1 shorter than antenna 2; peduncular article 1 longer than article 2, length 1.1 times article 2; article 2 longer than article 3, length 3 times article 3. Mandible accessory setal row with 4 robust setae; palp 3- articulate, apically setose and marginally setose; article 1 shorter than article 2; article 2 longer than article 3; article 3 short, subequal in length to article 1. Labium outer plates entire, without an apical duct; mandibular lobe with straight margins, rounded apically. Maxilla 1 palp well developed, article 2 with 6 apical robust slender setae. Maxilliped outer plate with developed row of large robust setae along medial margin. Coxae 1– 4 as long as broad. Gnathopod 1 subequal in size to gnathopod 2; coxa subequal to coxa 2, broader than deep, anteroventral corner produced, subacute, anterior margin straight; basis longer than coxa, anterodistal lobe large and rounded, with 5 slender setae; carpus subrectangular, shorter than propodus, anterior margin with 2 robust setae; propodus narrow, subrectangular, palm extremely acute, straight. Gnathopod 2 basis longer than coxa, distal lobe small and rounded, not reaching beyond ischium, anterodistal corner with 3 slender setae; carpus subrectangular, longer than propodus, anterior margin without setae; propodus narrow, subrectangular, palm extremely acute, palm convex, with 1 robust seta defining palm; dactylus subequal in length to palm.

Description of holotype. Head as long as deep. Antenna 1 shorter than antenna 2; peduncular article 1 longer than article 2, length 1.1 times article 2; article 2 longer than article 3, length 3 times article 3; article 3 shorter than article 1, length 0.25 times article 1; primary flagellum with 28 articles; accessory flagellum absent. Antenna 2 robust, distinctly stouter than antenna 1; peduncle article 4 subequal in length to article 5; flagellum longer than peduncular article 5, with more than 14 articles (damaged). Labrum directed nearly straight down, lateral margins without midlateral notches. Mandible molar well developed, triturating, accessory setal row with 4 robust setae; palp 3-articulate, apically setose and marginally setose; article 1 length 2.1 times width, shorter than article 2, length 0.7 times article 2; article 2 length 2.4 times width, longer than article 3, length 1.2 times article 3, with 3 marginal setae; article 3 short, length 3 times width, subequal in length to article 1, with 3 apical setae. Labium outer plates entire, without an apical duct; mandibular lobe with straight margins, rounded apically. Maxilla 1 inner plate with 1 slender seta; palp well developed, article 2 with 6 apical robust setae. Maxilla 2 inner and outer plates subequal in width; inner plate without oblique setal row. Maxilliped outer plate with developed row of large robust setae along medial margin.

Pereon. Coxae 1– 4 as long as broad. Gnathopod 1 subequal in size to gnathopod 2; coxa subequal to coxa 2, broader than deep, anteroventral corner produced, subacute, anterior margin straight; basis longer than coxa, length 2.1 times width, anterodistal lobe large and rounded, with 5 slender setae; ischium anterior margin without lobe; merus anterodistal lobe acute, posterodistal corner rounded; carpus subrectangular, length 1.75 times width, longer than merus, shorter than propodus, length 0.8 times propodus, anterior margin with 2 robust setae; propodus narrow, subrectangular, length 2.3 times width, palm extremely acute, straight, without posterodistal shelf or defining palm corner and robust setae; dactylus inner margin serrate. Gnathopod 2 basis longer than coxa, length 3.4 times width, anterodistal lobe anterodistal lobe small and rounded, not reaching beyond ischium, anterodistal corner with 3 slender setae; ischium anterior margin without lobe; merus margin without lobe; carpus subrectangular, longer than propodus, length 1.1 times propodus, anterior margin without setae; propodus narrow, subrectangular, length 3.5 times width, palm extremely acute, palm convex, with 1 robust seta defining palm; dactylus subequal in length to palm, tapering evenly, apically acute, inner margin crenate.

Pleon. Epimera 1–3 posterodistal corner broadly rounded. Uropod 1 reaching end of uropod 2 rami; peduncle with 8 robust setae, without slender setal fringe, distoventral spur absent; inner ramus subequal in length to outer ramus, with 3 marginal and 4 apical robust setae, slender setae absent; outer ramus slender, length 6 times width, with 1 marginal and 4 apical robust setae. Uropod 2 peduncle without distolateral spur, with 3 robust setae, slender setae fringe absent; inner ramus longer than outer ramus, with 1 marginal and 4 apical robust setae, slender setae absent; outer ramus with 2 marginal and 4 apical robust setae, slender setae absent. Uropod 3 peduncle longer than broad, length 1.5 times breadth, length 4.2 times rami, with 1 marginal and 2 apical robust setae, with distal slender setae, without marginal slender setae; rami short, as long as broad; outer ramus subequal in length to inner ramus, with 2 large recurved distal robust setae, with patch of small lateral denticles, without lateral setal fringe; outer ramus with 1 distal robust seta and distal slender setae, without lateral robust setae. Telson subtrapezoidal, apically truncated, with small apical cusps, with 5 pair of lateral setae, 2 pair of lateral plumose setae, without apical setae.

Remarks. The elongate, rectilinear carpus and propodus of gnathopods 1 and 2 in E. taylori sp. nov. is similar to E. burrowwo sp. nov. Exampithoe taylori sp. nov. can be separated from the latter species by the gnathopod 1 basis being much shorter and the propodus palm, which is extremely acute and without a palm defining robust seta. In E. taylori the mandibular palp is 3-articulate, further separating it from E. burrowwo , which has a 2-articulate palp.

Distribution. Known only from the type locality.
