Type species: Phalaena stratiotata Linnaeus, 1758 .

Described by Munroe (1972), Speidel (1984), Yoshiyasu (1985) and Speidel (2005).

A genus of more than 50 species found throughout the world.

Moths of moderate size with wingspan in the range 12–25mm, with long narrow wings, especially in the females. The ratio of length to width of the forewings up to 4:1.

Head with labial palpus of variable length, upturned, with scales beneath segments 1 & 2. Maxillary palpus present, antennae annulated, somewhat thickened in males.

Forewing with R 2 free or stalked with R 3+4, R 3 and R 4 are long stalked, beyond cell. The male genitalia have simple elongate valva, the female genitalia have a long ductus bursae and the corpus bursae is elongate, usually bearing a pair of dentate bands.
