Etymology. Latin for wonder, monster, omen.

Type locality. 100 km north-east of North Point, Flinders Island, eastern Bass Strait (38°51.8'S, 148°26.5'E).

Diagnosis. Head lateral cephalic lobe subacute. Maxilla 1 outer plate, palp with 11 nodular robust setae and 1 slender robust seta. Maxilliped inner plate 6 robust setae. Gnathopod 1 basis anterior margin cuspidate. Pereopod 3 carpus posteroproximal margin produced into a hook; propodus palm obtuse, margin convex. Epimeron 3 posteroventral corner subquadrate. Uropod 3 inner ramus shorter than article 1 of outer ramus. Telson slightly longer than broad, length 1.3 × breadth.

Description of holotype female. Head lateral cephalic lobe subacute. Antenna 1 peduncular article 3 hidden in medial view; accessory flagellum 4-articulate; primary flagellum 5-articulate. Mandible incisor rounded, margin smooth; palp attached about midway, just proximal to molar; palp article 2 length 1.6 × article 3. Maxilla 1 inner plate with 1 apical seta; outer plate with 10 setal-teeth; palp with 11 nodular robust setae and 1 slender robust seta (broken) across distal margin and extending down subapical medial margin. Maxilla 2 inner plate subtriangular, narrow; smaller than outer plate; outer plate subrectangular. Maxilliped inner plate with 6 nodular robust setae; outer plate with 12 embedded nodular setae and 1 slender seta (broken); palp article 4 spatulate.

Gills pereonite 2 – 6 present. Coxae 1–3 ventral margin with sparse fine setae. Gnathopod 1 simple; basis anterior margin cuspidate; carpus 1.8 × propodus; dactylus posterior margin smooth. Gnathopod 2 minutely chelate. Pereopod 3 chelate; merus length 0.6 × width; carpus posterior margin as long as free proximal margin of propodus, posteroproximal margin produced into a hook; propodus length 1.8 × width, posteroproximal margin not produced, palm obtuse, margin convex. Pereopods 5–6 basis posterior margin expanded; merus posterior margin expanded. Pereopod 7 basis posterior margin excavate distally.

Epimeron 1 rounded. Epimera 2–3 subquadrate. Uropods 1 peduncle with 7 lateral and 2 apical robust setae; inner ramus with 3 lateral robust setae; outer ramus with 2 lateral robust setae. Uropod 2 peduncle with 2 lateral and 2 apical robust setae; inner ramus with 3 lateral robust setae; outer ramus with 1 lateral robust seta. Uropod 3 peduncle with 1 apical robust seta; inner ramus shorter than article 1 of outer ramus; outer ramus 2-articulate, article 2 length atleast 1.1 × width (broken). Telson slightly longer than broad, length 1.3 × width.

Male sexually dimorphic characters. Gnathopod 1 basis anterior margin serrate; carpus length 2.8 × width, longer than propodus, length 1.2 × propodus. Pereopod 3 propodus length 1.2 × width, posteroproximal margin produced into a lobe, lobe not extending beyond carpus; propodus palm slightly convex.

Remarks. A large posterodistal hook on the carpus of pereopod 3 separates the male and female End.

prodigium from other endevourids. See also remarks for End. inusitatus sp. nov. A large body size species, at> 8 mm the specimens examined here are more substantially larger than material reported for other endevourid species which range between 2 and 5 mm in length.

Distribution. Eastern Australia, Moolooloobah, Bass Strait, Australia (current study).
