status

Cyathea carolihenrici Lehnert, Amer. Fern J. View in CoL 93: 180. 2003.

Range: — Peru, Bolivia (LP).

Ecology: —Rare in cloud forest and elfin forests, mature plants often part of the canopy; 2750–3100 m.

Notes: —Similar and undoubtedly most closely related to C. meridensis H.Karst. from the northern Andes. On average, Cyathea carolihenrici has thicker trunks with fronds scars arranged in clear horizontal bands (less obviously so or spirally in C. meridensis ) and has darker laminar squamules (dark brown to castaneous vs. yellowish). Also similar is C. lindeniana C.Presl , but that species has sparser yet more clearly recognizable scurf squamellae (erect, flat, small lanceolate squamules, dark orange-brown vs. dense pulverulent scurf of appressed, dissected castaneous squamellae in C. carolihenrici and C. meridensis ). The ranges of these species all overlap in Peru, and they may all be present in Bolivia. See Lehnert (2009a) for further discussion.
