Polygonum neglectum Besser (1821: 45) View in CoL

P. aviculare subsp. neglectum (Besser) Arcang. View in CoL

Type:― Not designated.

Description:― Annuals. Stems 10–60 cm long, prostrate, striate, rather slender, flexuous, and weak, with somewhat elongated internodes. Nodes slightly swollen. Ochrea 3–8 mm long, hyaline, deeply lacerate with age at the apex. Petioles 0–2 mm long, generally included in ochrea. Leaves subequal, 4–16 × 1–1.5 mm, narrow, linear or linear– elliptic, acute. Bracts the same as the leaf. Inflorescences 1–4 flowered fascicles, barely exserted from the sheathing stipules in leaf axils. Pedicels tiny, somewhat winged, generally shorter than ochrea. Tepal 5, pink to reddish rarely white, 1.8–2.5 mm long, branched vein present on the outer face; lobes narrow, obtuse to spathulate–rounded, often ascending and not overlapping in fruit. Styles 3 with 3 short stigmas. Stamens 7–8; filaments dilated at the base. Achene trigonous 2–3 mm long, often exserted from the persistent tepal, surface punctuate; achenes light brown somewhat long apex and longer than from tepals in late season.

Vernacular name:― The authors propose “Zarif madımak” as a vernacular name for Polygonum buxiforme according to the guidelines of Menemen et al. (2016).

Note:― Polygonum neglectum is related to P. aviculare but easily distinguished by thin, long and uniform leaves throughout the entire plant. The other is the type of P. rurivagum that is nearby. P. neglectum can be separated by short ochrea, leaf type, line veins, and dimensions.
