Circumglobal (Hulley and Paxton in Carpenter and De Angelis 2016); western Pacific Ocean north to Japan (Nakabo in Nakabo 2002); southern California ( 32°21’N, 120°06’W) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) to central Baja California ( Berry and Perkins 1966) and Chile ( Sielfeld and Kawaguchi 2004). Mesopelagic (Hulley and Paxton in Carpenter and De Angelis 2016); depth: surface (nightlight; Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California) to perhaps 3,450 m ( 11,316 ft) (Personal communication: Scripps Institution of Oceanography Fish Collection, La Jolla, California).
