Species 32: Teuchophorus grandis View in CoL sp. nov. (male and female). (figures 141–145)

Etymology. Lat. grandis , ‘large’.

Diagnosis. A large species, remarkable by a strong sexual dimorphism: abdomen of female largely yellow, unsclerotized except on first and sixth terga, small spots on other terga, and sterna. No wing stigma; wing rather brownish tinged, especially so in male. Anterior part of thorax, and pleurae yellowish brown. Eyes of male narrowly separated. Third antennal segment pointed, a little longer than deep in male, slightly deeper than long in female. All femora ventrally without bristles. Hind tibia with three longer bristles among a row of short bristles. Legs yellow; hind leg dark brown except base of femur.

Material examined. Type material: Indonesia, Irian Jaya, Topo , large swamp forest near river, 24 April 1997,    male and      two females (No. 970033, leg. P. Grootaert and Ph. Hoyois) .

Male

Body length 2.0 mm; wing length 1.8 mm.

Head. Frons and face with shining greenish black ground colour. Face narrow on its lower half, about one-third times as wide as depth of third antennal segment. Palpi brownish yellow, each with a small black apical bristle. Rostrum yellow. Occiput blackish, shining. Chaetotaxy as usual; two very short, thin postocellars. Postoculars uniseriate, black. Antenna (figure 141): short, dark brown; apical half of third segment yellowish brown. Second segment with very short marginal bristlets. Third segment triangular, pointed, a little longer than deep. Arista dorsal, very shortly pubescent, nearly 2.5 times as long as antenna.

Thorax. Thorax anteriorly yellowish brown; mesoscutum gradually darkening towards the rear, anteriorly yellowish brown, posteriorly dark brown, subshining. Pleurae yellowish brown; metapleura brown, with black anterior border. Chaetotaxy as usual; acr very short; scutellum with two large marginals and very short, thin lateral hairlets. No propleural bristles.

Legs. Legs, including coxae, yellow. Hind leg dark brown, with basal third of femur yellow; mid coxa with a vague indication of a brownish longitudinal stripe.

Fore leg. Coxa anteriorly with short, dark hairs; at apical rim a row of about six short, black bristly hairs. Femur without bristles. Tibia slightly shorter than femur, without bristles or serration. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.55: 0.27:0.11:0.09: 0.08:0.1.

Mid leg. Coxa without bristles, anteriorly and apically shortly haired. Femur with preapical av and pv, both rather well developed. Tibia about as long as femur; two ad, one pd, one av, all fairly long; a few short apicals. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.7:0.27: 0.15: 0.13:0.09: 0.09.

Hind leg. Coxa with a black exterior bristle. Femur (figure 142) without bristles, apart from a tiny preapical pv; hairs of the anteroventral row very slightly lengthened. Tibia (figure 142) a little longer than femur; dorsally an irregular row of short bristles, and, between them, three longer bristles. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.8:0.16: 0.25: 0.15:0.1: 0.1.

Wing. Wing (figure 143) rather brownish tinged. No stigma; costa not thickened. r4+5 and m1+2 distally nearly parallel. Halters with yellowish brown knob; stem lighter coloured. Squamae brownish yellow, with dark brown margin, and black cilia.

Abdomen. Terga and sterna dark brown, dull. Hairs on terga short, black; hindmarginal bristlets not much longer than the hairs. Sterna with short black hairs. Hypopygium (figure 144) brown to dark brown. Cerci small, yellowish brown; surstyli finger-like, rather pointed, of unequal width.

Female

Body length 2.0– 2.1 mm; wing length 1.75–1.8 mm.

Head. Face wider than in male, more than half as wide as depth of third antennal segment. Third antennal segment triangular, pointed, slightly deeper than long.

Legs. Legs coloured and bristled as in male.

Wing. Wing less browned. Knob of halter brownish yellow of dusky yellow.

Abdomen. Abdomen (figure 145) largely unsclerotized, yellow. Sclerotized, and dark brown, are first and sixth terga, some small spots on terga 2–4, and sterna. Oviscapt yellow, with a row of very short black acanthae.
