Species 34: Teuchophorus chaetulosus View in CoL sp. nov. (male)
(figures 151–154)
Etymology. A Latin adjective, derived from Gr. chaitè, ‘bristle’, meaning ‘full of small bristles’, alluding to the bristling of the hind leg.
Diagnosis. Rather large species. No wing stigma. Eyes narrowly separated on face. Antenna short, dark brown; third segment brownish yellow, pointed, about as long as deep. Hind femur anteroventrally, in front of preapical av, with three thin bristles, and a row of shorter, pale anteroventral hairs on basal two-thirds. Hind tibia with six short bristles, only one of which is somewhat longer; no ventral bristles. Fore femur with a row of short, pale posteroventral hairs. Hypopygium small; cerci yellow; surstyli black, pointed.
Material examined. Type material: Indonesia, Irian Jaya, Nabire, Wanggar river , secondary rain forest, rather dry soil, 30 April 1997, male, male (No. 970064, leg. P. Grootaert and Ph. Hoyois) .
Male
Body length 1.6 mm; wing length 1.3 mm.
Head. Frons and face with shining greenish black ground colour. Face at its narrowest point about half as wide as depth of third antennal segment. Palpi dark brown, each with a small black apical bristlet. Rostrum brown. Occiput greenish black. Chaetotaxy as usual; no postocellars. Lower postocular cilia yellowish. Antenna (figure 151): short; first and second segments dark brown; third segment brownish yellow. Marginal bristles on second segment short, longest above. Third segment about as long as deep, pointed. Arista a little more than twice as long as antenna, very shortly pubescent; basal aristal segment slightly longer than third antennal segment.
Thorax. Mesoscutum and scutellum with shining blackish green ground colour. Pleurae dark brown, subshining on larger sclerites. Chaetotaxy as usual; acr short, uniseriate; scutellum without lateral hairs. No propleural bristles.
Legs. Legs, including coxae, yellow; tarsi very slightly darkened from tips of first segments onwards.
Fore leg. Coxa anteriorly with very short pale hairs, at tip with a few short, brown, hair-like bristles. Femur with a row of short pale posteroventral hairs. Tibia shorter than femur, without bristles. First tarsal segment at base with minute black ventral spinules. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.35: 0.2:0.08: 0.06:0.05:0.07.
Mid leg. Coxa without bristles. Femur with weak preapical av and pv. Tibia about as long as femur; one ad, two pd, one very weak, short av. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.5: 0.2:0.1:0.09:0.07: 0.08.
Hind leg. Coxa with a weak, black exterior bristle. Femur (figure 152) with three thin anteroventral bristles near tip, in front of the preapical av; a row of short, pale anteroventral hairs on basal two-thirds of femur. Tibia (figure 152) about as long as femur; six short dorsal bristles, only one of which (at about two-thirds from base) is longer (slightly longer than diameter of tibia); no ventral bristles. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.55: 0.11: 0.15:0.1: 0.07:0.08.
Wing. Wing (figure 153) hyaline. No stigma; costa not thickened. r4+5 and m1+2 apically very slightly diverging. Halters yellow. Squamae yellow, with brown border, and brownish cilia.
Abdomen. Terga and sterna dark brown. Hairs and hind-marginal bristlets of terga very short, black. Hypopygium (figure 154) small, brown; cerci small, yellow; surstyli pointed, black.
Female Unknown.
