Species 10: Teuchophorus longisetosus View in CoL sp. nov. (male and female) (figures 54–59)

Etymology. Lat. longus , ‘long’, seta, ‘bristle’, alluding to the long bristles on mid leg.

Diagnosis. A medium-sized species with relatively short wings. Eyes touching on face. No wing stigma; costa feebly thickened. Third antennal segment triangular, about as long as deep. Mid femur and tibia bearing remarkably long bristles and setae. Hind femur near apex with rows of not very long av and pv. Hind tibia with only one longer bristle in a row of short bristlets; ventrally on basal half a brown brush of short cilia. Hypopygium very small.

Material examined. H male and female.     : Indonesia: Irian Jaya, Nabire, Topo , forest near river (pools, muddy areas), 24 April 1997 (No. 970034, P. Grootaert and Ph. Hoyois) .

Male

Body length 1.4–1.7 mm; wing length 1.0– 1.3 mm.

Head. Frons and face with dark metallic green ground colour. Eyes touching each other over a short distance below middle of face. Palpi small, dark brown, each with a small brown apical bristlet. Rostrum short, yellowish brown or brown. Occiput dark metallic greenish black. Chaetotaxy of head as usual; two tiny postocellars. Postoculars uniseriate, yellow. Antenna (figure 54): short, yellowish brown to dark brown; first segment and apical half of third segment lighter coloured. First and second segments small; second segment with a circlet of very short bristlets, longest above. Third segment triangular, with a rather acute apex, about as long as deep. Arista dorsal, about three times as long as antenna, shortly pubescent. Basal aristal segment nearly as long as third antennal segment.

Thorax. Mesoscutum and scutellum with shining blackish metallic green ground colour. Pleurae dark brown, with a greenish metallic gloss on larger sclerites. Chaetotaxy as usual; acr uniseriate, very short. Scutellum with two marginals, without lateral hairs. No propleural bristle.

Legs. Legs, including coxae, yellow; mid and hind coxae a little darker than front coxa; mid coxa with a vague brownish longitudinal stripe. Hind leg feebly browned on apical third of femur and basal third of tibia. Mid and hind tarsi very feebly darkened.

Fore leg. Coxa anteriorly with short yellow hairs, that grow longer and darker towards apex of coxa. Femur with only a very small preapical pv. Tibia a little shorter than femur (7:8), without bristles or serration on shaft; at tip anteroventrally a very short yellow fringe, with two tiny yellow bristlets. First tarsal segment ventrally near base with two very small black spinules. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.35: 0.2:0.08: 0.06:0.05:0.06.

Mid leg. Coxa anteriorly with sparse, short yellow hairs, without exterior bristle. Femur (figure 55) ventrally near base with two remarkable bristles: a rather long, brownish bristle nearest to base, about as long as diameter of femur, followed by a very long and strong, straight, black bristle, more than twice as long as diameter of femur; ventrally on apical half a row of few, thin, mostly pale, hair-like bristles, the second of which is longest, longer than diameter of femur; a small preapical av. Tibia (figure 54) slightly longer than femur; two ad, one pd, all thin and moderately long; ventrally three remarkable, very long bristles, the first of which is thin, brownish yellow, more than twice as long as diameter of femur, the middlemost, about middle of tibia, is stronger, black, about as long as the first bristle; the third is black, a little shorter than the previous bristles. Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.5:0.2: 0.12: 0.09:0.06: 0.06.

Hind leg. Coxa with a thin, black exterior bristle. Femur (figure 56) near apex with a row of three or four thin, long, brownish or yellowish av and two or three pv, slightly longer than diameter of femur; on basal half one or two small yellow av; a small preapical av. Tibia (figure 56) about as long as femur, gently bent before its middle, dorsally, on apical two-thirds with an irregular row of short bristles, only one of which is slightly longer than diameter of tibia; posteriorly a fringe of thin cilia, longest towards base of tibia, where they, together with ventral and posteroventral cilia, form a brown brush (figure 57). Length of tibia and tarsal segments (in mm): 0.5:0.14: 0.19: 0.13:0.09:0.07.

Wing. Wing (figure 58) hyaline, relatively short and broad, with brownish yellow veins. No stigma; costa feebly thickened. r4+5 and m1+2 apically gently bent, more or less parallel. No anal vein. Halters yellow. Squamae yellow, with a browned border, and brownish cilia.

Abdomen. Abdomen brown to dark brown, without metallic gloss; venter more yellowish brown. Hairs and hind-marginal bristles on terga short, longer on first tergum, dark. Hypopygium (figure 59) very small, brown or dark brown; aedeagus with three finger-like protuberances; cerci small, brown.

Female

Body length 1.6–1.75 mm; wing length 1.15–1.2 mm.

Face rather wide, with shining greenish black ground colour. Legs yellow, only very feebly browner at apex of hind femur, base of hind tibia, and hind tarsus. No long bristles on mid femur and tibia; mid femur with only a small preapical av; mid tibia with two ad, one pd and one av. Hind femur without av or pv; hind tibia without ventral brush. Abdomen brown; oviscapt yellow, with a row of 10 short, black acanthae.
