scientific name

Neognathophausia gigas ( Willemoës-Suhm, 1873 )
status

Neognathophausia gigas ( Willemoës-Suhm, 1873)

Distribution. One of the most widely distributed lophogastrids, almost cosmopolitan: Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Southern Ocean. Latitude range: 66ºN–74ºS.

Depth range. 650–4000 m.

Habitat. Meso- to bathypelagic.

Iberian Seas published records. SE Bay of Biscay continental slope ( Lagardère 1985). Off Asturian coast ( Lagardère 1983, Petryashov 2014). Off Galician coast ( Nouvel 1943). Off Porto ( Nouvel 1943) . Gibraltar ( Nouvel 1943). Offshore species related to the Canary Archipelago ( Wittmann & Wirtz 1998, Haroun & Garrido 2003, Wittmann & Riera 2012). Azores ( Nouvel 1943, Meland & Aas 2013).

Remarks. The status of the genus Neognathophausia proposed by Petryashov (1992) (with two species N. ingens and N. gigas ), synonymised with Gnathophausia by Casanova et al. (1998), Mees & Meland (2012) and Wittmann et al. (2014), is now reinstituted by Petryashov (2015).
