COMMENT: Included in Capromys by Mohr, 1939, Mitt. Zool. Mus. Hamburg, 48:75, Varona, 1974:67, and Hall, 1981:865. However, considered a distinct genus by Woods and Howland, 1979, J. Mammal., 60: 112, and Miller, 1929, Smithson. Mise. Coll., 82(4):1 —3. GSM considers Geocapromys a distinct genus. Includes G. columbianus and G. pleistocenicus , known only from fossils, probably Holocene, from Cuba; see Hall, 1981:866.
