TYPE LOCALITY: Paraguay, Asunción, by subsequent restriction ( Cabrera, 1958:39) .

DISTRIBUTION: South America in two populations: E Colombia, Venezuela, and W Guyana; E Bolivia, SE Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and N Argentina.

SYNONYMS: bonaria Thomas, 1923; crassicaudis Olfers, 1818; ferruginea Larranaga, 1923; lutrilla Thomas, 1923; paranalis Thomas, 1923; travassosi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1936; turneri Günther, 1879.

COMMENTS: Reviewed by Marshall (1978a, Mammalian Species, 91).
