Distribution: Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia; Russia: European part, S Siberia, Far East; China, S Korea, Japan, ( Wikström et al. 2020); first records for Ukraine: Zhytomyr, Kyiv and Transcarpathian regions.

Remark. Pyralis cardinalis can be confused with Pyralis regalis ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) which is distributed all over Ukraine, but P. cardinalis is well characterized by antemedial line of forewing, which is medially widened outwardly, and hindwing with distinct purple shade. For detailed differences, see Wikström et al. (2020).
