Chichimecactus Bárcenas, H.M.Hern. & P.Hern.-Led. , gen. nov.
Type species: Chichimecactus corregidorae (S.Arias & E.Sánchez) Bárcenas, H.M.Hern., & P.Hern.-Led .
Diagnosis: —New genus similar to Strombocactus , from which it differs primarily by having larger, globose to cylindrical stems, with strongly keeled tubercles; longer, black, persistent spines; and seeds with flat periclinal cellwalls, lacking a strophiole. Strombocactus usually has smaller, depressed to shortly globose stems, with slightly keeled tubercles and shorter, greyish, deciduous spines. Also, the seeds of Strombocactus have convex cell walls, with a conspicuous strophiole.
Etymology: —The generic name makes reference to the original assemblage of Aridoamerican ethnic groups of the Chichimeca Nation that inhabited the vast arid and semiarid lands of northern Mexico and Southwestern United States, including the harsh regions of the Sierra Gorda in the state of Querétaro, where Chichimecactus corregidorae occurs.
