Pachycheles ackleianus A. Milne-Edwards, 1880: 36 (type-locality: west coast of Florida, USA, and Jolbos Island, Mexico). Pisosoma angustifrons— Boone, 1930: 70, pl. 18 [not Pisosoma angustifrons Benedict, 1901 ].

Material examined. Brazil: Espírito Santo—Proj. REVIZEE, st. 28, 55 m, 1 male (MZUSP-19549); st. 35C, 55 m, 1 male (MZUSP-19548). Rio de Janeiro—Cabo Frio, Arraial do Cabo, Prainha, 1 ovigerous female (MZUSP- 19899).

Recognition characters. Carapace broader than long; longitudinally convex, smooth except for some rugae on posterolateral margin; epibranchial region dilated. Front with straight margin. Outer orbital angle produced into acute tooth. Basis-ischium of antenna with acute spine on mesial margin. Chelipeds long, about 3 times length of carapace; subequal, strong; carpus covered with flattened tubercles, flexor margin with 3 tooth-shaped tubercles; propodus with tubercles similar to those on carpus but more evident, grouped together in longitudinal lines, especially next to extensor margin; dactylus with row of tubercles on cutting face. Walking legs pubescent, robust, rugose, with granules on extensor margins of carpus and propodus; propodus with 4 spines on flexor margin, dactylus with 3 spines on flexor margin. No gonopods in males. Telson divided 5 plates.

Habitat. Found associated with sponges down to depths of 82 m (Gore 1974).

Western Atlantic—USA, Florida; Gulf of Mexico; Mexico, Quintana Roo; Panama, Mulatas Archipelago and Canal Zone; Cuba; Jamaica; Dominican Republic; Puerto Rico; St. Thomas; Antigua; Martinique; St. Lucia; Barbados; Colombia, Cabo de La Vela; Santa Marta and Rosario Islands; Venezuela, Los Roques, Margarita and Los Testigos Islands; Guyana and Brazil (from Pará to Rio de Janeiro).
