TYPE LOCALITY: Surinam .

DISTRIBUTION: South America E. of Andes, Venezuela south to Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Goias, and Marananhao ( Brazil).

COMMENT: Includes gymnurus, hispidus, loricatus, lugubris, and latirostris; see Wetzel, 1980, Ann. Carnegie Mus., 49: 344. Type locality corrected by Thomas, 1911, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1911:141.
