Type locality. — W Sumatra, Mt. Singalang.

Type material. — Holotype ♂ from the type locality, Anai , 400-500 m, secondary forest, leaf litter, 9- 21.xi. 1994, S. Djojosudharmo; paratypes: 4 ♂, 4 ♀, same data .

Other material.— W Sumatra, Jambi, W of Mt. Tujuh Lake, 1400 m, 1 ♀ ( MHNG), 14.xi. 1989, Agosti, Löbl, Burkhardt; W Java, 2 ♂, Puncak Pass , 1000 m, leaf litter, 1. iii. 1975 and 23. v. 1976, PR. Deeleman; Cibodas, Mt. Gedeh National Park , 1 ♀, 1500­ 1600 m, forest leaf litter, 5-8.xii.1986, S. Djojosudharmo .

Diagnosis.— In the field, this species is distinct by the sharp diagonal dividing line on the abdomen separating the grey uppersurface from the white undersurface. The male palp is distinguished from that in S. lucens , borneensis and bulbosus by having a distal incision on the proximal apophysis of the male palpal tibia and the distal tibial apophysis sinuated; the PME are much smaller than the PLE (fig. 744). It can be distinguished from scrobicu ­ latus by the smoother and more shiny carapace with only very few pits and the shorter tegulum in the male palp; in the epigyne by the paired opening, the higher number of coils and the elliptical spermathecae.

Description. — Male, holotype. Total length 4.00 mm. Carapace length 1.80 mm, width 1.40 mm, height at coxae II 0.75 mm, head width 0.75 mm, width eye group 0.55 mm; abdomen 2.00 mm long, 1.10 mm wide. Leg lengths: legs I 6.30 mm (1.65-2.25-1.40- 1.00), leg II 4.95 mm (1.35-1.70-1.05-0.85), leg III 4.30 mm (1.15-1.35-1.10-0.70), leg IV 6.45 mm (1.70-2.00-1.75-1.00), palp 0.60-0.20-0.25- 1.80 mm. Carapace glossy, dark chestnut, with a few rows of widely separated pits, sternum and legs brown, femora deep brown, leg I with dark tibia with white apical band; abdomen with dark glossy dorsal scutum over 7/8 of its length, venter posteriorly with dark grey flanks, diagonally with sharp line delineating white belly, laterally with post-scutal streaks; area above spinnerets white. PME much smaller than other eyes (fig. 744). Leg spines relatively feeble, ventral surface of tibiae not flattened. Spination: femur I with 0-1 pl, femur IV with l-0d, tibia I with 6 pairs, tibia II with 5 pairs of ventral spines, tibia III and IV with 2-2v and one pair apically, and 0-1-0pl, sometimes 0-1-0rl, tibia IV also with an additional apical ventral pair; metatarsi I with 4 ventral pairs, metatarsus II with 3-4 pairs metatarsus III and IV with 2- 2v, 1-0pl, 1-0rl. Abdominal collar with 2-3 shallow grooves. Palp: figs 745-746 View Figs 745 - 752 ; femur modified by having two bulges distally on the ventral surface and lower tibial apophysis truncation incised, embolus very long, encircling whole dorsal surface of tegulum and aligned with membranous tegular apophysis and conductor reaching tip of cymbium.

FEMALE, paratype. Total length 5.25 mm. Carapace length 2.40 mm, width 1.65 mm, head width 1.10 mm, eye group 0.70 mm; abdomen 2.85 mm long, 1.40 mm wide, epigyne 0.35 mm wide, 0.45 mm wide. Leg lengths: leg I 6.80 mm (1.80-2.50-1.50-1.00) leg II 5.80 mm (1.60-2.00-1.25-0.95), leg III 5.30 mm (1.45-1.75-1.25-0.85), leg IV 7.65 mm (2.00-2.50-2.05-1.10), palp 0.90-0.35-0.45- 0.80 mm. Carapace smooth, without gloss; eyes, sternum and legs as in the male; dorsal scutum over half of length abdomen. Colour of femora less contrasting than in males. Abdomen dark with white pre-anal spot. Leg spination as in males. Epigyne fig. 747 View Figs 745 - 752 , vulva with a pair of anterior openings, plugged one-sided in most females, with plugging material filling duct to first curve ( fig. 748 View Figs 745 - 752 ), spermathecae elliptical, with a dorsal pit in proximal half and another one in first coil of duct.

Variability. — In the W Java males, the femoral humps are absent and the tibial apohysis is only slightly excised. In the epigyne no differences were seen. Total length of other specimens: Singalang, males 4.00- 4.50 mm, female 4.80 mm, Java males 5.20 and 5.50 mm; female 7.50 mm. As the male palp from Java specimens is not quite identical, it is difficult to estimate if the observed difference in the male palp exclude them from this species.

Distribution. — W Sumatra, Mt. Singalang; possibly W Java.

Etymology. — nitens (Latin) = glossy: the male’s carapace and abdomen.
