Distribution. Philippines (Mindanao). The citation regarding the Vietnam (Nam Cat Tien Nat. Park) specimen by Kirschenhofer (1996) requires confirmation because it could possibly refer to another species of the genus.

Systematic notes: This species was described from two specimens collected in Mindanao. The various keys provided have distinguished it from M. pilifera ( Nietner 1858) by the prothorax being less than one and a half times longer than wide. However, it should be more than twice longer than it is wide in M. pilifera , as shown in Liebke’s (1938) drawing of the type of this species. Since the type specimen of M. pilifera has been destroyed or lost ( Jedlicka 1963; Baehr 2016), we regard the subsequent mentions for other countries of this species ( Jedlicka 1963; Zhao & Tian 2010; Anagha et al. 2024), as very doubtful. The characters in the key by Baehr (2016) are clearly taken from the original description and show that the author has not directly seen any specimens. The photograph provided by Anagha et al. (2024) of a specimen, declared by them to be a “verified specimen from the collection of the National History Museum Erfurt”, cannot pertain to this species because of several characters presented in the original description ( Nietner 1858) or in the drawing provided by Liebke (1938): color of femora markedly contrasting between base and apex, ratio l/w of pronotum, etc. The specimen in the Erfurt Museum seems a typical specimen of M. indica Baehr, 2016 . On the other hand, the species most closely corresponding to the description and drawing of M. pilifera is M. bicoloripes Baehr, 2016 , known only from Nepal and India (Anagha et al. 2024). However, until new material from Sri Lanka is made available for study, any systematic decision will only be hypothetical. Currently, M. pilifera will remain, in our opinion, a species inquirenda. In any case, M. bakeri remains a distinct species from this and from all the other species of the genus.
