Material examined. Portugal: 1 ♂, 08.X.2019, Guarda, Manteigas, São Pedro ( Covão da Ametade, Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela ), 40°19'42.2"N, 7°35'17.4"W; leg. RA GoogleMaps . 2 ♂ (1 slide mounted), 20.IV.2015, Guarda, Seia, Alvoco da Serra ( Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela ), 40°17'39.2"N, 7°40'12.5"W; leg. AG GoogleMaps .

Remarks. Phaeobalia lyneborgi (Sierra Nevada) and P. zwicki ( Vaillant & Vinçon, 1986) (Pyrenées) are the only Phaeobalia species known to date from the Iberian Peninsula, both members of the P. inermis -group. The specimens of both appear almost identical. Vaillant & Vinçon (1986, p. 270) supposed that they might be conspecific. Portuguese material was also very similar to the specimens mentioned above; colour pattern and stigma are alike, but less intensive. Even the number and position of setae and bristles on the fore femur and the mesonotum are identical. Shape and size of the clasping cercus are slightly variable, but not sufficiently different to clearly separate the species. Finally, it is not impossible that all the above-mentioned species are synonyms of Phaeobalia dimidiata ( Loew 1869) ; this question can be solved only by comparison with the type material. So far as we know, it is new for Portugal.
