Etymology:—Referring to the nodulose basidiospore ornamentation.

Type:— INDIA. Uttarakhand: Dhakuri, 2584 m, N 30º04.970ʹ E 079º55.134’, 3 August 2016, P. Uniyal, PU-1275 (holotype CAL).

Diagnosis:—Differs from Lactarius montoyae by its brown pileus, reddish orange discoloration of the lamellae when damaged and nodulose basidiospore ornamentation.

Description:— Pileus 26–47 mm diam., convex to plano-convex, centre slightly depressed, surface smooth when young, rugose at maturity, radially rugose near centre, light brown (6D4–5) to dark brown (6F7–8), paler toward margin when young; margin entire to undulate, decurved. Lamellae adnexed, distant (6L+l/cm), 3–8 mm wide, cream

(4A3) to light orange (5A4), initially unchanged when cut, turning reddish orange (7B7–8) after 10–15 minutes, edges concolorous to marginate; 3 lamellulae between 2 lamellae. Stipe 40–63 × 6–11 mm, cylindrical, tapering toward apex,

concolorous with pileus, white at base. Context white to yellowish white, unchanging on exposure and in FeSO 4 and KOH, brownish red (8D7–8) in guaiacol; taste mild, odour pleasant. Latex moderately abundant, white, unchanging on lamellae; taste mild. Spore print not obtained.

Basidiospores 7.5– 8.4 –9 × 7– 7.7 –8 μm, (n = 40, Q = 1.06– 1.09 –1.13), subglobose, ornamentation 0.6–1.5 μm

high, composed of mostly round warts and ridges with entire to wavy edges, often with round extremes resulting in a nodulose appearance, never a complete reticulum; plage amyloid. Basidia 49–77 × 12–19 μm, subclavate, 4- spored; sterigmata 5–10 μm long. Lactifers in hymenophoral trama up to 11 μm diam.. Pleuromacrocystidia absent. Pleuropseudocystidia abundant, 5–9 μm thick, emergent, unbranched to frequently branched near apex, tortuous at base. Cheilomacrocystidia absent. Cheiloleptocystidia abundant, 20–32 × 4–7 μm, cylindrical, some with swollen base, round apex; brownish in KOH. Pileipellis a trichopalisade, 66–117 μm deep; suprapellis composed of cylindrical cells, 21–43 × 4–6.5 μm, aseptate, with brown intracellular pigment. Pileopseudocystidia 3.5–4 μm diam., sometimes forked near apex. Lactifers in pilear trama up to 8 μm thick. Stipitipellis a trichopalisade, 62–100 μm deep, terminal cells with intracellular brown pigment.

Habitat:—Gregarious, under Quercus sp. in subalpine mixed forest.
