Notes. In this catalogue we do not use the names Ptyctima Poppe & Oudemans (1906) and Arthroptyctima Grandjean, 1967. On the other hand, we consider the name Euptyctima Grandjean, 1967 justifiable as it includes the monophyletic group of ptyctimous mites Euphthiracaroidea and Phthiracaroidea .
To stick to the formal side, then, according to Poppe and Oudemans(1906),Ptyctima includes only Phthiracaroidea . It is uncertain whether they included a representative of the Mesoplophoridae — Mesoplophora michaeliana Berlese, 1904 , which was already known at that time. Therefore, we propose Ptyctima as a taxon incertae sedis.
The name Arthroptyctima Grandjean, 1967 cannot be retained, would only be an empty name of the paraphyletic taxon ptyctimous including ptychoidal Protoplophoridae and Mesoplophoridae . Both families are members of the two superfamilies Protoplophoroidea and Hypochthonoidea which also include the nonptychoidal taxa. A more detailed discussion on this topic can be found in Norton & Sidorchuk (2014).
