A. Psilorhynchus sucatio brachyrhynchus exhibit only two elongate branchiostegal rays on both right and left sides, a highly unusual condition for cypriniform fishes, which typically possess three branchiostegal rays ( McAllister, 1968; Roberts, 1973; Conway et al., 2010). In these latter ·

specimens the anteriormost branchiostegal ray articulates with the lateral face of the posterior ceratohyal, and not with its medial face, which suggests that it is homologous with the middle branchiostegal of other cypriniform fishes and not the anteriormost ray, which is absent ( Conway & Britz, 2010).
