The monophyly of this clade is supported by the following characters in both of the equally parsimonious cladograms.

Character 66, 0> 1: presence of ossification at base of gill filament.

Character 72, 0> 1: anterior edge of basibranchial 2 markedly wider than posterior edge ( Siebert, 1987). Independently gained at the level of clade G and at the level of the clade containing all members of the family Botiidae , except Yasuhikotakia sidthimunki .

Character 74, 0> 1: presence of basibranchial 4. Independently gained at the level of clade C and in Chromobotia macracanthus .

Character 122, 0> 1: absence of hypural 6. Independently gained at the level of clade C.
