Barymutilla André, 1901b (as subgenus of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 ). Z. Hymen. Dipt. 1: 334. Female, male.

Gender. Feminine.

Type species. Mutilla pythia Smith, 1855 (female), by subsequent designation of Ashmead, 1903: 327, 331.

Taxonomic history. Raised to generic status by André, 1902c: 31. Junior subjective synonym of Mutilla Linnaeus, 1758 according to Bischoff, 1920: 209. Resurrected to generic status by Lelej & Nemkov, 1997: 17. Valid generic name.

Sex association. The male of the type species was associated and described by André, 1901b: 335.

Distribution. Afrotropical.
