Type species: Geonemus geoffroyi Guérin-Méneville, 1831 , subsequent designation by Alonso-Zarazaga & Lyal (1999)

The genus contains species of large body size (ca. 17–31 mm) and dense scaling, usually of intense green or blue color. Currently, the main diagnostic characters for the genus are the densely squamose antenna with a relatively short scape ( Heller, 1923; Riedel 2009). Based on the structure of the male transfer apparatus (TA) it can be subdivided into the E. schoenherrii -group and the E. loriae -group ( Riedel, 2002); the former characterized by its spine-like TA, the latter with a TA compact and lyriform.

The new species belongs to the E. loriae -group and is distinguished from all other species of this group by the presence of black longitudinal bands on the elytra that it shares only with E. cuvierii Guérin-Méneville.
