Salyavata variegata Amyot & Serville, 1843

This subfamily is pantropical, but only Salyavata Amyot and Serville, 1843 , occurs in the western hemisphere ( Maldonado 1990; Schuh & Slater 1995). There are five described species within the genus ( Maldonado 1990; Doesburg & Brailovsky 2001). Until now, only S. variegata has been recorded from Colombia, but the species is also known from Panama, Ecuador, French Guiana, Surinam, Brazil, and Bolivia ( McMahan 1982; Maldonado 1990; Doesburg & Brailovsky 2001). Some of the specimens examined here were collected near termite nests. This includes one nymph from Antioquia (Cocorná) which is completely covered with debris, and agrees therefore with observations of McMahan (1982), who reported camouflaging behavior by nymphs of Salyavata . Nymphs of S. variegata have never been described ( McMahan 1983), but it is here assumed that the examined nymphs belong to this species. These nymphs have a conspicuous shield­like structure lateral to the stridulatory sulcus, which is absent in the adult. This shield resembles the one found in adults of the Phimophorinae ( Usinger & Wygodzinsky 1964).

Although Wygodzinsky (1948) recorded one female from “Bogotá, Colombia, Lindig col.,” it is possible that Bogotá is not the real locality (see above, under Brontostoma sanguinosum ). Additional localities are given for this species, which demonstrates its wide distribution in Colombia in lower and median altitude zones, and its frequent association with termite nests.
