Pterygosoma adramitana Jack, 1961: 244 , fig. 3; Fajfer and Melnikov 2014: 409 View Cited Treatment , figs 9–11, 13
Pterygosoma expansum Bertrand, Finkelman and Paperna, 2000: 280 , figs 1−13 syn. n.
Type host: Acanthocercus adramitana (Sauria: Agamidae ). Type locality: Saudi Arabia (Sharif).
Diagnosis. FEMALE. Gnathosoma . Chelicerae 200–255 long. Slender cheliceral part always 1.3–1.5 times longer than swollen cheliceral part. Fixed cheliceral with numerous tines. Setae dG and dF equal in length. Palpal tibia with slender claw. Palpal tarsi with 4 smooth setae. Subcapitulum with filiform setae n. Hypostome with round- ed or slightly flattened apex. Idiosoma 520–670 long and 1000–1205 wide. Dorsum with 7–8 pairs of slightly serrate setae: anterior group consisting of 4–5 setae and lateral group consisting of 2–4 setae. Medial part of idiosoma with 4 pairs of dorso-median setae: dm1 slightly serrate, dm2–dm4 paddle-shaped. Postero-lateral part of idiosoma with 7 pairs of paddle-shaped setae. Eyes absent. Venter. Setae vm1–vm3 smooth. Genital series represented by spine-like conspicuous setae g1–g4. Pseudanal series represented by 1 pair of spine-like setae ps1 and 4 pairs of paddle-shaped setae ps2–ps5. Legs chaetotaxy as in adramitana group ( Table 1). All setae on each podomere filiform, except for slightly serrate setae dFI–III. Setation of tarsi I−IV as in group A ( Table 2). Setae tc’ of legs II–IV and setae vs’, vs” of legs I–IV slightly serrate, setae a’, a”, u’, u” of legs I–IV smooth.
MALE. Gnathosoma as in female, but swollen cheliceral part and slender cheliceral part subequal in length. Idiosoma 330–395 long and 570–650 wide. Dorsum with slightly serrate setae: anterior group of 4–5 setae, lateral group of 4 setae. Medial part of idiosoma with 3 pairs of dorso-median setae: dm1 slightly serrate, dm2 and dm3 slightly apically expanded. Postero-lateral part of idiosoma with 5–7 pairs of setae. Eyes present. Aedeagus about 145–180 long, directed forward; genito-anal opening with 1 pair of filiform setae and 1 pair of spine-like inconspicuous setae. Venter as in female. Legs as in female.
Type material (examined). One female lectotype and 2 paralectotypes ( NHM no. 1966.02.22.775–779) from Acanthocercus adramitanus (Anderson) (Sauria: Agamidae ) ( NHM no. 1903.03.06.1–5), SAUDI ARABIA: Schaf, 6 March 1903, coll. unknown.
Type material deposition. Type material deposited in the NHM .
Non-type material (examined). Two females from Acanthocercus adramitanus ( CAS no. 145377), SAUDI ARABIA: Wadi Mahra, 19º38’N, 42º38’E, 5 July 1976, coll. J. Gasperetti; 3 females and 2 males from same host species ( CAS no. 145308) and locality, 5 July 1977, coll. J. Gasperetti ; 4 females and 3 males from same host species ( CAS no. 145310) and locality, 4 July 1977, coll. J. Gasperetti ; 3 females from same host species ( CAS no. 144206), SAUDI ARABIA: Hijla , 18º25’N, 42º5’E, February-March 1977, coll. M. al Mefrih GoogleMaps ; 1 female and 1 male from same host species ( CAS no. 144205) and locality, February-March 1977, coll. M. al Mefrih ; 2 females from same host species ( CAS no. 136530), SAUDI ARABIA: Barahard 20º21’N, 41º15’E, 9 August 1973, coll. J. Gasperetti. GoogleMaps
Host and distribution. This species was recorded from Acanthocercus adramitanus from Saudi Arabia [Sharif; Wadi Mahra; Hijla and Barahard] ( Jack 1961; Fajfer and Melnikov 2014) and Stellagama stellio (Haas 1951) from Jerusalem [Ma’ale Adumim; Kanot; Tel Aviv-Yafo] and Israel [Hadera] Bertrand et al. 2000).
Remarks. In the re-description of P. adramitana Jack, 1962 ( Fajfer and Melnikov 2014) setae a’ and a” of tarsi I are marked incorrectly as eupathidia and it’ and it” of tarsi I as simple setae whereas the re-examination of these species shows that setae a’ and a ” are filiform and smooth, and it’ and it ” of tarsi I are in form of eupathidion.
Moreover, based on examination of type specimens of Pterygosoma expansum Bertrand, Finkelman and Paperna, 2000 I synonymized this species with P. adamitana Jack, 1962 . I did not observe clear differences between the species. The authors ( Bertrand et al. 2000) compared their species with P. sinaita Jack, 1961 instead of P. adramitana Jack, 1961 which resulted in the erroneous erection of a new species. This study shows that P. expansum and P. adramitana are morphologically identical. According to Bertrand et al. (2000) one seta on genu I is present (it is missing in analyzed type material of P. expansum ) and the chelicerae are 100–150 long (the author clearly measured only cheliceral shaft; the chelicerae are 210–240 long).
