Polyphrix varians Townes   ( Figs 13, 16, 19 View FIGURES 7–19 )

Polyphrix varians Townes, 1970:283   . Description , figure, distribution (Óbidos, Pará, Brasil). Holotype ♀ in the American Entomological Institute, Gainesville.

Polyphrix varians: Carrasco, 1972:328   . Listed.

Polyphrix varians: Yu & Horstmann, 1997:284   . Listed.

The examined specimen from northern Brazil has most of the features described by Townes for the species, except for the following additions or differences. Antenna with 33–34 flagellomeres; pronotum with dorsal submarginal protuberance moderately small, sharp ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 7–19 ), projecting laterally ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 7–19 ); median portion of postpectal carina weak and very short; transverse furrow at base of propodeum laterally with three longitudinal, short wrinkles; propodeum behind anterior transverse carina with about 10 distinct, straight, regular, transverse wrinkles, anteriorly weaker than posteriorly ( Fig. 19 View FIGURES 7–19 ); areolet rectangular, 1.87–2.40 wider than high; ventral valve of ovipositor with 8 teeth, the last 3– 4 faint. The overall “fulvoferruginous” color described by Townes is here interpreted as dark orange (200,119,063) ( Fig. 16 View FIGURES 7–19 ), the first metasomal tergite basal 0.3 is yellowish, with dark orange in the middle, apical 0.3 brownish, with a white stripe on the apex; tergite 2 with apical 0.17 orange.

Distribution. The specimens of P. varians   originally studied by Townes, now at the American Entomological Institute, were checked, but none have been collected in Peru. Therefore, the occurrence of P. varians   in that country, as registered by Townes (1970) and later cited by Carrasco (1972), is incorrect. The specimens examined by the authors were collected recently in the Amazon Basin, Brazil, at nearly the same latitude and about 4º W from the type locality.

Material examined. Three females: Brazil, PA, Melgaço, Caxiuanã, Trilha Estação Científica Ferreira Pena , 13–16.XI.2003, yellow pans, APAguiar & JDias, and same data except Trilha Igarapé Tijucaquara, 18–21.XI.2003; Brasil   , GO, Uruaçu, Serra da Mesa Survey , 14º17.0´S 48º54.8´W, 27.V.1996, yellow pans along permanent stream, N.F.Johnson leg. Specimens in the collections of the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo and Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, Brazil GoogleMaps   .
