Lycosa (Tarantula) maesta Holmberg, 1876: 26

Tarentula moesta: Holmberg 1881: 161 , pl. IV, fig. 12 (female from near Buenos Aires, Argentina, E. Lynch Arribálzaga leg., without any type designed, see remarks). New synonymy

Lycosa moesta: Simon 1886: 561 , fig. 2.

Alopecosa moesta: Petrunkevitch 1911: 551 View in CoL .

Remarks. Holmberg (1876) proposed Lycosa (Tarantula) maesta for the first time based only on the 16 mm total length of the specimen he examined. Though superficial, this species description was sufficient to make the species description a valid nomenclatural act (see ICZN 1999: art. 6). Holmberg (1881) transfers this species to Tarentula and redescribed it based on a set of approximately 200 specimens collected by Lynch Arribálzaga at the surroundings of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He also clarified (in Holmberg, 1881) that the specimen used to propose Lycosa moesta was pinned, although no type was assigned. This is corroborated by the statement made by Levi (1964): “…Holmberg’s species, mostly from the Buenos Aires vicinity, there exist no types ”. Simon (1885) placed Lycosa moesta within an arbitrary Alopecosa group, which was posteriorly transferred to the genus Alopecosa by Petrunkevitch (1911). After examining Argentinian, Peruvian, Brazilian, and Uruguayan specimens we concluded that are conspecific with the specimens described by Holmberg (1881) but does not fit the Alopecosa diagnosis (see Lugetti & Tongiorgi 1969; Dondale & Redner 1979).

Diagnosis: Males of Tropicosa moesta can be recognized by the short terminal apophysis, which is curved at the base and tapered at the tip ( Figs 18b View FIGURE 18 , 19e View FIGURE 19 ), not abruptly tapered as in Tropicosa thorelli nor straight as in T. baguala . Females of T. moesta can be differentiated by the length of the transverse septum almost equal to the width of the widest part of the median septum ( Figs 16a, d View FIGURE 16 ).

Description. Male (MCTP 35786). Color in ethanol ( Fig. 20a‒f View FIGURE 20 ): carapace brown, covered by short white bristles; narrow uniform longitudinal median yellow band same color as the submarginal bands ( Fig. 20a View FIGURE 20 ). Chelicerae brown, as the carapace. Opisthosoma dark olive with a cardiac mark inside a broad yellow band ( Fig. 20a View FIGURE 20 ). Venter yellow with a black, uniform, spotted band ( Fig. 20e View FIGURE 20 ). Femora I−II brown with ventral and lateral iridescence; femora III−IV paler, with annulations. Ventral scopulae on tarsi legs I−II, thinner than in tarsi legs III−IV.

Palp tibiae cylindrical, slightly wider apically. Cymbium piriform. Distal file on tibia facing a scrapper on the proximal part of the cymbium ( Fig. 19i View FIGURE 19 ). Cymbium with a bunch of apical macrosetae ( Fig. 19b View FIGURE 19 ). Tegulum striated, with a curved sperm duct ( Figs 19e, 19g View FIGURE 19 ). Median apophysis laminar and curved ( Figs 18d View FIGURE 18 , 19e View FIGURE 19 ), triangular, transversal, with ventral process triangular and pointed ( Figs 18b, g View FIGURE 18 , 19h View FIGURE 19 ); terminal apophysis laminar, hyaline, curved and parallel to subterminal apophysis, which is membranous ( Fig. 18b View FIGURE 18 ). Palea rounded partially sclerotized ( Fig. 19f View FIGURE 19 ). Embolus arising from the retrolateral margin of palea, with conspicuous pars pendula ( Fig. 19b View FIGURE 19 ).

Leg formula IV>I>II>III (IV>II>III>I). Female (MCTP 10059). Color in ethanol ( Fig. 17a‒f View FIGURE 17 ). Carapace, chelicerae, legs, and opisthosoma as in male except in the ventral side of femora I and II, which are uniform.

Epigyne ( Figs 15 View FIGURE 15 , 16 View FIGURE 16 ), median septum constriction twice the length of transversal septum ( Fig. 16a View FIGURE 16 ). Triangular hoods as wide as the median septum ( Figs 15a View FIGURE 15 , 16a View FIGURE 16 ). Transversal septum almost as wide as median septum ( Figs 16a, 16d View FIGURE 16 ). The copulatory opening is narrow, located between the transversal and median septum ( Fig. 16c View FIGURE 16 ). In dorsal view, fertilization duct membranous.
