Selenophorus concinnus View in CoL species group
Recognition. Microsculpture absent on pronotum, distinct on elytra; pronotum with hind angles rounded. Dimorphism + ♂ 1 — ♀ 2. Endophallus not armed with spines.
Remarks. Nearctic members of the concinnus group show considerable interspecific and intraspecific variation in dorsal coloration. Individuals of Selenophorus gagatinus consistently have the dorsum uniformly black. However, conspecific individuals in the other species vary from uniformly dark to bicolored, the latter having the forebodies yellowish to reddishbrown in stark contrast to the dark elytra. The color variations likely contributed to the past confusions in distinguishing S. semirufus and S. s chaefferi. Moreover, we noted that several mature dark specimens of S. semirufus from Texas were mislabeled as the similar species S. gagatinus . The following are three noteworthy Mexican species in the concinnus group.
Selenophorus dichromatus (Casey)
Hemisopalus dichromatus Casey 1914: 139 . Type locality: Mexico (Durango City ) . Types: USNM.
Selenophorus dichromatus View in CoL is known in northcentral Mexico with one female [PWMC] taken 130 miles south of the Texas border in Ocampo, Coahuila. The species is likely to be discovered in the USA. It typically has a bicolored dorsum similar to many S. semirufus View in CoL , but the pronotal base is only finely punctulate and with hind angles more rounded. The elytra are shiny with finely stretched microsculpture, slightly iridescent. ABL 7.0–8.0 mm .
Selenophorus suavis Bates 1884: 274 View in CoL . Type locality: Mexico ( Las Vigas , Oaxaca) . Types:NHMUK.
This is another USA-candidate species that is widely distributed in Mexico including the border state of Sonora adjacent to Arizona. One male specimen [UASM #308266] from Graham Co., Arizona with label “ S. suavis View in CoL sp?” was determined to be S. concinnus View in CoL . Specimens superficially appear like mature individuals of S. semirufus View in CoL with uniformly dark dorsum, but the pronotal base is much broader against the elytra, the shiny pronotal disc has more well impressed stretched microsculpture, the duller elytra have well impressed irregular isodiametric microsculpture, trochanters yellowish brown, remainder of legs dark reddish-brown. The aedeagus is similar to that of S. semirufus View in CoL . ABL 7.0–8.0 mm.
Selenophorus tubericauda Bates
Selenophorus tubericauda Bates 1884: 273 View in CoL . Type locality: Mexico (near Mexico City; Jalapa , Tabasco) . Types: NHMUK.
The males have a distinctive bilateral pair of small carinate prominences on ventrite 6 similar to those of the Texas species S. chaparralus View in CoL in the opalinus View in CoL group. See the latter species for additional comparisons.
