Key to the males of Physetopoda of the Iberian Peninsula

[unknown for Ph. romanoi Lo Cascio & Grita, 2010 , Ph. unicincta ( Lucas, 1848) and Ph. sericeiceps ( André, 1901) ]. Modified from Pagliano & Agnoli (2018) and Pagliano (2021).

1. Body only with black pubescence, without traces of white-silvery setae.................. Ph. punctata ( Latreille, 1792)

- At least the metasoma is partially with white-silvery setae.................................................... 2

2. Ocelli conspicuously large, diameter of anterior ocellus larger than OL; OOL about equal to diameter of ocellus......... 3

- Ocelli smaller, diameter of anterior ocellus smaller than OL; OOL larger than diameter of ocellus..................... 7

3. Clypeus with an evident medial longitudinal carina.......................................................... 4

- Clypeus with a vague medial longitudinal carina............................................................. 5

4. Mesosoma mostly red............................................................. Ph. lucasii ( Smith, 1855) .

- Mesosoma largely black, with tegulae and scutellum red................... Ph. lucasii pseudobimaculata (Suárez, 1959)

5. Preapical tubercles of the clypeus small, non-protruding beyond the head (dorsal view)................................................................................................. Ph. daghestanica ( Radoszkowski, 1885)

- Preapical tubercles of the clypeus evident, very visible and large, protruding beyond the head (dorsal view)............. 6

6. Preapical tubercles of the clypeus larger and more protruding beyond the head (dorsal view). Propodeum elongated; T2 about 1.2–1.3 times wider than long................................................... Ph. mendizabali ( Suárez, 1956)

- Preapical tubercles of the clypeus smaller and less protruding beyond the head (dorsal view). Propodeum truncated; T2 about 1.5 times wider than long....................................................... Ph. halensis ( Fabricius, 1787)

7. T3 with a band of dense white-silvery setae.......................................... Ph. nuptura ( Mercet, 1905)

- Metasoma without bands of dense white-silvery setae, at most with distal fringes on the terga........................ 8

8. Clypeus with evident and very visible preapical tubercles..................................................... 9

- Clypeus with small preapical tubercles................................................................... 10

9. Clypeus with basal part striated. Larger eyes than the following species, ratio between eye length and OOL 2.1–2.6; eye length and eye-anterior ocellus distance: 1.1–1.3. Vosella long, with almost parallel sides, inner side with interrupted row, basal part with short dense setae, apical part with sparse long setae................................ Ph. ligustica ( Invrea, 1951)

- Clypeus with basal part sparsely punctated. Smaller eyes than the previous species, ratio between eye length and OOL: 1.2– 1.4; eye length and eye-anterior ocellus distance: 1.0. Volsella short, curved and narrower at the apex., inner side with noninterrupted row, setae progressively longer apically...................... Ph. fresnoi Romano & Parejo-Pulido sp. nov.

10. Clypeus with medial longitudinal carina ending in two preapical tubercles. Basivolsellar setae remarkably much protruding beyond volsellar cuspis in lateral view......................................... Ph. rufosquamulata ( André, 1903)

- Clypeus with medial longitudinal carina that widens distally to form an inverted Y-shaped elevated in the middle and two preapical tubercles. Basivolsellar setae not longer than volsellar cuspis in lateral view...... Ph. scutellaris ( Latreille, 1792)
