TYPE LOCALITY: Altai Mtns. ( U.S. S. R. or Mongolia) .

DISTRIBUTION: Mtns, of Central Asia from Altai through the Tien Shan and Pamir Ranges to Afghanistan, Kashmir, Nepal, and parts of W. and N.C. China.

COMMENT: Type locality fixed by Pocock, 1930, J. Bombay Nat. Hist. Soc., 34:332. Corbet, 1978:185, placed this species in Panthera , but see review by Hemmer, 1972, Mamm. Species, 20:1- 5, and Heptner and Naumov, 1972, [Mammals of the Soviet Union], Vol. 2(2):211, who retained the genus Uncia for this species, as do OLR and NAN.
