TYPE LOCALITY: South Africa, Cape Prov., Cape of Good Hope .

DISTRIBUTION: Steppe and savanna zones from Baluchistan through Iran and Turkmenia ( U.S. S.R.) to N.E. Arabia; widespread in Africa except the Sahara; formerly India and Egypt.

PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered.
