This genus has had a particularly confused taxonomic history with several generic names ( Chlorochroa , Lioderma Uhler , Pitedia Reuter , and Rhytidolomia Stål ) used by different workers. This situation was thoroughly studied by Thomas (1983) who concluded that all of our species belong in one genus and Chlorochroa had priority; he did, however, continue to recognize Rhytidolomia as a valid subgenus. At present, Chlorochroa contains nearly 25 species, nearly all of which occur in North America (three species occur in Europe, and another in Baja California). Some species are very difficult to separate, requiring a careful examination of the male genitalia. The sayi -group of species was reviewed by Buxton et al. (1983); the rest of the genus was reviewed by Thomas (1983) with a further synopsis of the Canadian species ( Scudder & Thomas 1987).
