Sticholotis taiwanensis Miyatake

( Figures 35–37 View FIGURES 29 – 37. 29 – 31 , 159–163 View FIGURES 159 – 168. 159 – 163 , 297 View FIGURE 297 )

Sticholotis taiwanensis Miyatake, 1982: 26 .

Diagnosis. This species is similar to S. morimotoi in general appearance, but can be distinguished from the latter by the reddish brown lateral margins of elytra and stout penis with very large basal capsule ( Figs 35 View FIGURES 29 – 37. 29 – 31 , 160–163 View FIGURES 159 – 168. 159 – 163 ). The elytra of S. morimotoi are black and the penis is relatively thin with small capsule ( Kamiya 1965, Sasaji 1971).

Description. TL: 2.27 mm, TW: 2.01 mm, TH: 1.09 mm, TL/TW: 1.13; PL/PW: 0.40; EL/EW: 0.90; HW/TW: 0.34; PW/TW: 0.66.

Head black, mouthparts brown. Pronotum and scutellum black. Elytra predominantly black, with narrow yellowish brown lateral margins. Elytra with 2 pairs of large dark red spots disposed as follows: one pair very large, irregular, on the middle of width of elytron (not touching margin), one pair smaller than the anterior, much nearer to suture than lateral margin ( Figs 35–37 View FIGURES 29 – 37. 29 – 31 ). Underside black. Legs dark brown.

Body almost circular in outline, hemispherical, shiny and glabrous. Head frontal punctures medium and dense, 0.4–1.0 diameters apart, with short sparse setae, interocular distance of eyes 0.71x head width ( Fig. 37 View FIGURES 29 – 37. 29 – 31 ). Pronotal punctures very fine, 2.0–3.0 diameters apart. Elytral punctures fine, similar to those on pronotum, 2.0–3.0 diameters apart, with a row of large punctures along suture. Elytral margins widely explanate, entirely visible from above.

Prosternal punctures inconspicuous with scattered long setae. Mesoventral surface shining, punctures fine and conspicuous, 1.0–1.5 diameters apart, with scattered short setae. Metaventrite broad and shining, coarsely densely punctate at center and guadually become sparser to sides. Elytral epipleuron broad, complete to apex, feebly foveate to accomodate femoral tips of hind legs. Wings well-developed.

Male genitalia: Penis moderately stout, capsule very large, apical potion membranous with long, very narrow, attenuate apically, slightly twisted, sclerotized process ( Figs 160–161 View FIGURES 159 – 168. 159 – 163 ); tegmen with penis guide slightly longer than parameres, in lateral view stout and straight, widest at base, tapering to apex; apex sharply pointed ( Fig. 162 View FIGURES 159 – 168. 159 – 163 ); penis guide in ventral view stout, widest at base, gradually narrowing to apex; apex slightly rounded ( Fig. 163 View FIGURES 159 – 168. 159 – 163 ); parameres very slender, almost straight, with short setae apically.

Female genitalia: Unknown.

Specimens examined. China, Taiwan: 2males, Fenchihu, [23°30.16′N, 120°41.84′E], ca 1400m, 10.iv.1977, Klapperich J leg. (SCAU).
