Description: —Trees, evergreen, up to 19 m. Bark white to dark grayish, greenish brown to brown; lenticels convex with irregular cracks. Branchlets pilose with grayish brown or yellowish hairs, or sometimes subglabrous. Leaves imparipinnate, 14–36 cm; petiole, rachis and petiolules pilose with appressed grayish-brown hairs, or glabrous; leaflets 3–9(–13), leathery to thickly leathery, oblong to ovate-oblong or oblong-obovate, elliptic, lanceolate, oblong-lanceolate to oblanceolate, 4.0–14.5 × 1.0– 5.7 cm, glabrous on both surfaces, sometimes vernicose adaxially, sometimes glaucous or pilose along mid-vein abaxially, apex acute to acuminate, obtuse or retuse, base rounded, broadly cuneate to cuneate or somewhat obtuse; lateral veins 7–12(–17) pairs, forming a ± 60° angle with the mid-vein, arcuate at margin but inconspicuous. Inflorescence a terminal panicle, lateral branches at lower part sometimes axillary; peduncle, rachis and pedicels densely pilose with yellowish-brown to brownish hairs, this turn sparse over time. Flowers small, ca. 7 mm long. Calyx campanulate, 4–5 mm long, persistent; lobes triangular, subequal, ca. 1.1 × 0.9 mm, tomentose with densely ferruginous hairs abaxially, pilose with sparsely ferruginous hairs adaxially. Corolla white, ca. 2 × as long as calyx; standard suborbicular, clawed, blade ca. 4 × 4 mm; wing petals linear-oblanceolate, clawed, blade ca. 4.5 × 2 mm; keel petals oblong, clawed, blade ca. 6 × 2 mm. Floral disc adnate to the calyx tube. Stamens 10, free, 5 fertile and 5 rudimentary alternatively borne on the margin of the disc, the rudimentary ones shorter and without anther, filaments of both types of stamens glabrous. Ovary and the lower part of the style densely pubescent with yellowish-brown hairs, denser near the ventral suture; 2-ovulate. Pods small, suborbicular to broadly orbicular, oblique elliptic to oblique elliptic-ovate or ovate-rhombic, somewhat swollen, vernicose, blackish-brown when dry, 1.5–2.0 × 1.5–2.4 cm, with a basal stalk 2–4 mm long, with an apical beak 3–4(–6) mm long, this often breaks or falls off at maturity, young pods covered with brownish hairs, glabrescent or only covered with light brownish hairs at margin at maturity. Seeds 1(–2), oblate to sub-orbicular, ca. 8.0–1.3 × 8.0–1.3 × ca. 6 mm; testa bright red, hard; hilum elliptic, 1–2 mm, borne at one end of the short axis.

Phenology: —Flowering April to May, fruiting September to October.

Distribution: —Endemic to China ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ).

Conservation status: — Ormosia semicastrata is widely distributed in S China, it was assessed as Least Concern (LC) by Zhao et al. (2019).

Notes: — Ormosia cathayensis H. Y. Chen (1943: 112) is known for its strongly asymmetric pods, as stated in the protologue, was synonymized by How (1951), who noted that strongly asymmetric pods could also occur in O. semicastrata . We follow How (1951) ’s treatment here.

How (1951) also described two new forms of Ormosia semicastrata : O. semicastrata f. litchiifolia F. C. How (1951: 235) and f. pallida F. C. How (1951: 235) . The former was characterized by its slender leaf rachis; leaflets 5–7(–9), smaller and thinner, elliptic or lanceolate, 4–9 × 1.5–3 cm, broadly cuneate to nearly rounded at base, lightly brownish on both surfaces when dry, vernicose adaxially; the latter was characterized by its leaflets (5–)7–9(–11), oblong-lanceolate or oblanceolate, 4–10 × 1.0– 2.5 cm, cuneate or somewhat obtuse at base, pale white adaxially and straw yellow abaxially when dry. These two forms were later reduced to synonyms of O. semicastrata by Wu et al. (2003). Given the extensive variability in this species, we here follow the treatments by Wu et al. (2003).

Although Sun & Vincent (2010) cited three names as synonyms of other species: Ormosia semicastrata f. apiculata Yakovlev as a synonym of O. apiculata , O. semicastrata f. howii Yakovlev as a synonym of O. howii , and O. semicastrata f. nanningensis Yakovlev as a synonym of O. nanningensis , the source of these names was not provided. Our attempts to locate the original documentation where Yakovlev formally published these new combinations and new states were unsuccessful. Yakovlev (1973) only listed Ormosia apiculata , O. howii , and O. nanningensis H. Y. Chen in Merrill & Chen (1943: 113) as dubious allies of O. semicastrata . Since it seems Yakovlev never formally published these names, we do not treat them here.
