Berndtia purpurea Utinomi, 1950
Berndtia purpurea Utinomi, 1950c: 445 , 457, figs 11–13. — Utinomi 1950b: 84–93, figs 1, 2. — Utinomi 1957: 4–23. — Utinomi 1960: 224–273. — Utinomi 1961: 414–443. — Tomlinson 1969: 79, fig. 17.
Material examined. CEL-Acro-sp-123, 16 specimens in the coral Lepastrea purpurea , He-Ping-Dao, 19 May 2010.
Diagnosis. Female with 5 pairs of terminal cirri, caudal appendages absent, when alive, outer surfaces of opercular bars with 3 paired blue-colored strip-shaped areas (3 on each bar), distributed at each of the two ends and middle portion, outer surfaces of opercular bars with dense, numerous spherical nodules, without setae, lateral margins with simple, bifid teeth, posterior lobes of operculum not protruding, thorax with 2 small conical processes on ventral side, in coral Lepastrea purpurea .
Distribution. Japan, Okinawa and Taiwan.
Remarks. This record represents a new record for Taiwan. Poore (2012) stated that this species was first described by Utinomi (1950c) in a book chapter in Japanese, prior to the detailed species description in Utinomi (1950b) in English. Poore (2012) stated the species also occurs in Australia, in the Northern Territory and Western Australia. A recent study (Chan et al. in submission), however, shows Berndtia purpurea to be a cryptic species complex in the West Pacific and the South China Sea. Therefore, the status of B. purpurea in Australia cannot be ascertained without checking the Australian specimens. In the study, we did not include Australia in the distribution data of B. purpurea .
