Type species: Paralecanium marianum Cockerell, 1902 .

Name derivation. The generic name Mariacoccus is composed of Maria -, taken from Maria in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, and - coccus , Latin (masculine, meaning a grain or seed), a name commonly used for scale insects.
