DIPSADIDAE Bonaparte 1838
status

FAMILY DIPSADIDAE Bonaparte 1838 , 124

(27 genera, 62 species, 1 endemic genus, 12 endemic species). Vidal et al. (2007), in an influential publication regarding the Caenophidia, erroneously credited Bonaparte (1840) for introducing the name Dipsadidae . However, the correct publication for that family name should be Bonaparte (1838, as Dipsadina). Solís et al. (2014) also cited that incorrect Bonaparte publication.

Cubophis Hedges & Vidal 2009 , 14 in Hedges et al. 2009 (1 species, 1 endemic species)

Cubophis brooksi (E) (Barbour 1914, 333). Despite saying they were documenting all name changes subsequent to the McCranie (2009) list, Solís et al. (2014) did not note that McCranie (2011a) resurrected this species name from the synonymy of C. cantherigerus (Bibron 1840 [plate XXVII] in de la Sagra 1838–1843).

Dipsas Laurenti 1768 , 89 (1 species)

Dipsas bicolor (Günther 1895, 178)

Enuliophis McCranie & Villa 1993 , 262 (1 species). Myers & McDowell (2014) suggested placing this genus in the synonymy of Enulius . The four species of Enulius (following Wallach et al. 2014) are the only New World dipsadines known to have the entire hemipenis covered with minute, uniform spinules. Placing Enuliophis , with its large hemipenial spines, in the synonymy of Enulius would eliminate that synapomorphy for Enulius .

Erythrolamprus F. Boie 1827 , col. 981 (1 species). Solís et al. (2014) listed 1826 as the date of publication for the description of this genus.

Leptodeira Fitzinger 1843 , 27 (3 species)

Leptodeira nigrofasciata Günther 1868 , 425

Leptodeira rhombifera (Günther 1872, 32). Despite saying they were documenting all name changes subsequent to the McCranie (2009) list, Solís et al. (2014) did not note that McCranie (2011a) resurrected this species name from the synonymy of L. annulata (Linnaeus 1758 [p. 224]).

Leptodeira septentrionalis (Kennicott 1859, 16 in Baird 1859). This widespread nominal form is apparently a complex of several species (see recent brief discussion in McCranie 2011a).

Rhadinella anachoreta (E. Smith & Campbell 1994, 2)

Rhadinella godmani (Günther 1865, 94). This nominal form appears to be a complex of several species occurring in isolated, montane localities.

Rhadinella kinkelini (Boettger 1898, 68)

Rhadinella lachrymans (Cope 1870, 154). The Honduran population assigned to this species appears to represent an undescribed species. Tissues are available.
