Marmosa (Exulomarmosa) simonsi Thomas, 1899
TYPE MATERIAL AND TYPE LOCALITY: BMNH 99.8 .1.20, the holotype by original designation, consists of the skin and skull of an adult male collected at Puná (2.73° S, 79.92° W; near sea level), on Isla Puná, Guayas province, Ecuador GoogleMaps .
SYNONYMS: None.
DISTRIBUTION: Marmosa simonsi occurs in mangroves and dry forests of the Pacific lowlands and Andean foothills of western Ecuador and northwestern Peru ( Rossi et al., 2010: fig. 28).
REMARKS: See Rossi et al. (2010) for an emended description, tabulated measurement data, and morphological comparisons with congeneric species. Marmosa simonsi was long considered a synonym or subspecies of M. robinsoni (e.g., by Herskovitz, 1951; Creighton and Gardner, 2008a), but Rossi et al. (2010) and Gutiérrez et al. (2010) showed that these taxa are morphologically and genetically distinct.
