Types. Holotype, male, 9.2 mm, paratypes, 8.5 (ovigerous and non-ovigerous females) in the Collection of Amphipoda of the Mission Biaçores lodged in the l’Institut de Zoologie “Dr. Augusto Nobre” de la Faculte des Sciences de Porto, as labelled: N.º 43a- Orchestia monodi View in CoL sp. n. A. et E. Mateus, O. Afonso.
Type locality. Santos beach, São Miguel Island, Azores, North Atlantic Ocean .
Ecological type. Beach-hopper.
Habitat. Found on the sea shores of Azores. It prefers protected beaches and can be found in estuarine areas and mangroves. On a beach to the east of Ponta Delgada and another beach in the north of the island.
Diagnosis (male). Based on Mateus, Mateus & Afonso (1986).
Gnathopod 2 propodus palm acute, without sinuses; dactylus not modified distally, blunt. Pereopod 6 coxa posterior lobe with anteroventral corner produced.
Remarks. Insularorchestia monodi has been erroneously reported from many places, but it appears to be confined to the Azores. There is no palmar notch of the male gnathopod 2 and the distal end of the dactylus is blunt. It should be noted that this species is based on material that is only 9.2 mm in length and may be immature.
Distribution. North Atlantic Ocean. Azores: São Miguel Island (Mateus, Mateus & Afonso 1986).
