Genus: Australocoelia Boucot & Gill, 1956
Type-species: Atrypa palmata Morris & Sharpe, 1846
Diagnosis: Small to medium with a subcircular outline and ventribiconvex profile. Suberect beak. Dorsal sulcus and low ventral fold; weakly sulcate anterior commissure. Strong simple rounded costae arising from the beaks. Absent dental plates; stout teeth, attached to posterior valve walls; deeply impressed pedicle scar; elongated diductor and smaller adductor with well-marked impressions. Pronounced notothyrial platform with stout median ridge supporting large cardinal process; ovate adductor field, well impressed (Savage et al. in Williams et al. 2000).
Description. Exterior: Unequally biconvex, pedicle valve having the greater convexity, flanks angularly plicated, suberect pedicle beak. Short, anteriorly curved hinge line. Sulcate anterior commissure.
Dorsal interior: Mound-like notothyrial platform surmounted by a blade-like median ridge that is terminally swollen. Adductor impressions are anterior to the notothyrial platform.
Ventral interior: Stout hinge teeth, triangular in cross-section, the apex of triangle directed anteriorly. Paired, striate adductor impressions anterior to the deeply impressed pedicle callosity ( Boucot & Gill, 1956).
