Figure 3 A–D View FIGURE 3
Holotype ( Fig. 3 A, C View FIGURE 3 ), male: “ Philippines — Mindanao Island, Davel de Oro, Maragusan / January, 2024 / leg. E. Avergonzado. (typed on white card) // HOLOTYPE male / Metapocyrtus (Trachycyrtus) uphagpula / CABRAS, OBRIAL & AGBAS, 2024 (typed on red card)” (Presently at TIRL, to be deposited at PNM. Paratype (4 males, 2 females); 1 female, same data as the holotype; 4 males, 1 females, Philippines — Mindanao Island, Davao de Oro, Maragusan / February 2024 / leg. G. Obrial, D. Agbas (all in TIRL, to be deposited at PNM, SMTD and CMNC).
Diagnosis. The new species is easily distinguished from its congeners by the deep and dark crimson coloration, absence of scales, and stout and slenderly ovate elytra with subacute apex.
Description. Male.
Dimensions: LB: 5.0–6.0mm (holotype 6.0mm). LR: 0.6–0.7mm (holotype 0.7mm). WR: 0.5–0.8mm (holotype 0.8mm). LP: 2.0– 2.2mm (holotype 2.2mm). WP: 1.9–2.0-mm (holotype 2.0mm). LE: 3.0– 3.8mm (holotype 3.8mm). WE: 2.3–2.8mm (holotype 2.8mm). N=4 for all measurements.
Integument dark crimson. Body surface matte, rostrum, head, legs and underside weakly lustrous.
Head dorsal surface rugose with sparse and appressed, piliform, bluish scales; lateral side below the eye with similar scales; forehead between eyes very weakly depressed with distinct median furrow; eyes medium-sized and very weakly convex not prominent on the outline of head.
Rostrum separated from the head by a distinct, sinuate, transverse groove reaching the dorsolateral margin; nearly subequal (LR 0.7 mm; WR 0.8 mm); dorsal surface coarsely rugopunctate on basal half and sparsely covered with appressed, piliform, blue scales, apical half coarsely punctate with few, appressed, minute setae; dorsum with indistinct ridge divergent anteriorly and dorsolateral margins significantly inclined towards sides; lateral surface with appressed, piliform, bluish scales and long, suberect, white setae towards anterior margin; dorsum with indistinct median furrow; dorsal contour in lateral view weakly convex, lateral contour in dorsal view slightly constricted at base and subtly expands towards apex. Antennal scape and funicle subequal in length. Scape covered with thin, appressed, light-colored setae, funicle with suberect, light-colored setae. Antennae with segments 1 and 2 subequal in length, three times longer than wide; segments 3 to 6 nearly as long as wide; segment 7 slightly longer than 3 to 6; club subelliptical, nearly three times longer than wide.
Prothorax subglobular; finely punctate and weakly rugose and covered with minute and appressed piliform, blue scales; slightly longer than wide (LP 2.2 mm; WP 2.0 mm), dorsal contour in lateral view weakly convex, lateral contour in dorsal view weakly convex.
Elytra ovate, moderately longer than wide (LE 3.8 mm; WE 2.8 mm), slightly wider and moderately longer than prothorax (WE 2.8 mm; WP 2.0 mm; LE 3.8 mm; LP 2.2 mm), body surface sparsely covered with minute setae and few minute, piliform, bluish scales; dorsal contour in lateral view moderately convex with gradual apical declivity; lateral contour in dorsal view uniformly convex from base until middle then abruptly tapers towards a subacute apex. Legs with moderately clavate femora. Femora covered with piliform, bluish scales especially the apical half. Tibiae covered with subappressed and suberect white and bluish setae, weakly serrated along inner margin. Protibiae and mesotibiae mucronate at apex. Tarsi moderately long and pubescent. Tarsomere 1 elongate, and subtriangular, longer than tarsomere 2; tarsomere 2 short, triangular, and simple without sharp projections at apical corners; tarsomere 3 as long as tarsomere 2, and bilobed; tarsomere 5 longer than tarsomere 1z; tarsal claws free.
Coxae sparsely covered with piliform, blue scales and setae. Mesoventrite and metaventrite with sparse setae; metaventrite covered with setae. Ventrite 1 weakly depressed in the middle with some punctures and sparse setae. Ventrite II weakly convex with sparse setae. Ventrite 3–5 with sparse setae. Ventrite 5 flattened and punctured with minute setae.
Male genitalia and sternite 9 as shown in figure 4 G–I.
Female Dimensions: LB: 6.5mm. LR: 0.7mm. WR: 0.9mm. LP: 2.5mm. WP: 2.2mm. LE: 4.0mm. WE: 3.0mm. N=2 for all measurements.
Habitus as shown in Figure 3 B, D View FIGURE 3 .
Female ( Fig. 3 B, D View FIGURE 3 ) differ from males in the following characters: a) elytra longer and wider (LE/WE 4.0mm/ 2.8mm, WE/WP 3.0mm/2.0mm) than male, b) elytra moderately longer than prothorax whereas male’s elytra are only slightly longer than prothorax (LE/LP 4.0mm/ 2.5mm), c) dorsal contour of prothorax in lateral view more convex, and d) apical declivity gradual but interrupted subapically then abruptly declines towards apex whereas male has a gradual apical declivity. Otherwise, females similar to the male.
Etymology. The specific epithet “ uphagpula ” refers to the Bisayan term for reddish brown which is the predominant color of the new species.
Distribution. Philippines (Mindanao: Davao de Oro, Maragusan, Mt. Candalaga).
