Generic diagnosis (emended)
Based on the Chinese, Nearctic ( Roback 1971), Palaearctic ( Tokunaga 1937), Australian ( Freeman 1961) and Afrotropical species ( Freeman 1953), the generic description of Nilotanypus males given by Murray and Fittkau (1989) can be emended as follows: Wing length 1.0–2.0 mm (1.03 mm in N. quadratus sp. n.). Preapical pseudospurs absent or present on fore ta 1 –ta 4 ( N. polycanthus sp. n.) and mid ta 1 –ta 2 ( N. fimbriatus (Walker)) . Fore leg ratio 0.6–1.1 (0.6 in N. comatus (Freeman) , 1.13 in N. minutus (Tokunaga)) . Mid leg ratio 1.0–1.6 (1.0 in N. parvus (Freeman) , 1.58 in N. polycanthus sp. n.). Anal point conical or quadrangular (quadrangular in N. quadratus sp. n.).
Distribution
Previously, the genus was known from the Afrotropical, Australian, Nearctic, Neotropical and Palaearctic Regions. The two new species described below were both taken in the Oriental part of China.
