Subfamily Aloninae Dybowski et Grochowski, 1894

Acroperus angustatus Sars, 1862 View in CoL . Records: Uéno, 1937: 206/5-1 (swamps in Wusuli district); Chiang & Du, 1979: 203–204/135 (Neng Jiang at Fula’erji in Heilongjiang; Inner Mongolia); Zhang et al., 1997c: 291/1 (Songhua Jiang at Sifangtai in Harbin). Rare in China. These determinations should be checked, because before the revision by Sinev (2009) authors were confused about differences between Palaearctic species of Acroperus View in CoL .

Acroperus harpae (Baird, 1835) View in CoL . Records: Uéno 1937: 205–206/5-2 (Raohe County, Wusuli district); Ye 1956: 51/II: 10 (Dongqian Hu); Chiang 1963b: 58 (Qinghai Hu); Chiang 1964: 79 (the sublake of Buluntuo Hai; puddles at Tieganlike; pools at Buerjin; the estuary of Kaidu He; littoral zone of Bosten Hu, all in Xinjiang); Shen & Sung 1964: 63 (Duoqing He in Tibet); Shen & Sung 1965: 299 (Duoma’er He; small lake nearby Nake Hu, both in Tibet); Chiang & Du 1979: 202–203/134 (ponds at Haiyan County in Qinghai Province; provinces of Taiwan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hubei, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Tibet and Xinjiang); Jiang 1982: 179 (Bomi, Lhasa, Yadong and Kangma in Tibet); Jiang 1983: 446–447 (a branch of Yigong Cuo in Bomi; a pool near the Potala Palace; Angjiu He in Pali Town; Yadong; Kangma, all in Tibet); Zhang & Chen 1996a: 22 (Lixin, Hefei and Dongzhi in Anhui); Xiang 2009: 109/61–62 (provinces of Taiwan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hubei, Jilin, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Qinghai, Tibet and Xinjiang); Xiang & Yu (unpubl. data: Dongqian Hu). Common Palaearctic cladoceran, but its presence in the tropics is doubtful ( Chatterjee et al. 2013).

Acroperus neglectus Lilljeborg, 1901 View in CoL . Record: Zhang et al. 1998: 159–160/1 (a small lake near Nen Jiang at Nehe County in Heilongjiang Province). Rare, status unclear, probably a junior synonym of A. harpae View in CoL (see Sinev 2009).

Alona affinis (Leydig, 1860) View in CoL . Records: Uéno 1937: 207 (swamps in Wusuli district (Yüeh-pien-pao, Hai-chü-tzu and Raohe); Chiang 1955: 107 /III: 24, 24a (Wuli Hu); Ye 1956: 52 /14, 14a (Dongqian Hu); Du & Lai 1958: 39 (Tai Hu); Du & Lai 1959: 310 (Tai Hu); Huang et al. 1959: 92 (Baiyang Dian); Du et al. 1964: 194 (Tai Hu); You 1962: 120 (Fujian); Chiang 1964: 80 (a puddle in Tieganlike; Eerqisi He in Buerjin; the litoral zone of Bosten Hu, all in Xinjiang); Shen & Sung 1964: 63 (Duoqing He in Tibet); Shen & Zhang 1964: 129 (Baiyang Dian); Shen & Sung 1965: 300 /1–2 (Duoma’er He and nearby pools; Nake Hu and its tributary and nearby small lakes, all in Tibet); Shen et al. 1966: 30 (Menghai, Simao and Yunjinghong); Chiang & Du 1979: 220 –221/149 (swamps at Yintan Town in Qinghai Province; Eerqisi He in Xinjiang; provinces of Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Hebei, Hubei, Yunnan, Inner mongolia and Tibet); Jiang 1982: 179 (Zayu, Lhasa, Bomi, Motuo, Linzhi, Cuona, Langkazi, Yadong, Kangma, Jilong and Mangkang in Tibet); Chen 1983: 23 (Yibin, Luzhou, Chongqing and Yichang section of Yangtze River); Jiang 1983: 446 –447 (Zayu, Lhasa, Bomi, Motuo, Linzhi, Cuona, Langkazi, Yadong, Kangma, Jilong, Mangkang); Li 1984: 26 ( Tianjin); Chen, 1984: 343 (Baiyang Tuo and Wenjia Dang along Yangtze River in Chongqing); Chen 1985: 2 (Yichang section of Yangtze River); Fan 1985: 13 (Tuo Jiang); Li 1985a: 22 (Estuary of Beitang in Tianjin); Li 1985b: 53 (Jinzhong He, between Chaobai He and Jiyun He in Tianjin); Chen 1987a: 12 (a bay in Jiang’an section of Yangtze River); Chen 1989b: 502 –504/1–2 (Kaitu He at Jiangkou County in Guizhou Province); Chen 1990b: 87 (the estuary of Tuo Jiang); Chen et al. 1991c: 87 (Guzhang in Hunan); You & Xu 1993: 19 (Meihuashan Nature Reserve); Chen 1994: 169 /1–2 (Lushui Reservoir); Peng 1994: 20 (Lushui Reservoir); Zhang et al. 1994: 179 (Jingdezhen, Wuning, Wuyuan, Boyang, Yushan, Nanchang, Fengxin, Qianshan, Guixi, Shanggao, Yujiang, Zhangshu, Xiajiang, Yongfeng, Ji’an, Taihe and Quannan in Jiangxi); Zhang & Chen 1996a: 22 (Jixi in Anhui); Zhang et al. 1997c: 293 –294/4 (Chishui He in Fuxing Town, Chishui City); Xu et al. 1998: 9 (Fuzhou Area, Western, Northern and Southern Fujian); Dai & Cai 1999: 21 (Jinghong and Menghai in Xishuangbanna); Shu et al. 2013: 206 (Potatso National Park in Shangri-La); Xiang 2009: 125 /95 (Yibin, Luzhou, Hejiang, Jiangjin, Chongqing, Wanzhou, Yichang, Chenglingji, Honghu, Jiayu and Wuhan section of Yangtze River; Tuo Jiang, Chishui He, Longxi He, Fu Jiang, Jialing Jiang, Huangbai He, Gan Jiang; Hong Hu); Xiang & Yu (unpubl. data: Dongqian Hu); as Biapertura affinis (Leydig, 1860) in Chen et al. 1989: 418 (Yanhe, Yinjiang, Tongren and Jiangkou in Guizhou). A common species.

Alona aliensis Chiang, 1980 View in CoL . Records: Jiang 1980: 335–336/a–b (a swamp near Xiangquan He and a puddle at the foot of Guxiang Hill, Zhada County, Ali District); cited by Jiang 1982: 179; Jiang 1983: 457/LXV: 5a–b. Could be endemic, but needs to be redescribed (Van Damme et al. 2010).

Alona cambouei Guerne & Richard, 1893 View in CoL . Records: Chen et al. 1992: 89–90/3 (Chiping in Shandong); Tian 2004: 23 (Shandong). As A. pulchella View in CoL in Chen 1993b: 27–28/1–5(a discarded fish jar in the yard of IHB, CAS, maybe from Dong Hu in Wuhan, male and female). A common tropical-subtropical taxon; many previous records of A. pulchella View in CoL and A. setigera View in CoL from South Asia really refer to this taxon (Kotov et al. 2013). The most obvious difference between A. cambouei View in CoL and A. pulchella View in CoL is in the dorsal head pores, and most records from China fail to describe them.

Alona cheni Sinev, 1999 View in CoL . Record: as A. setigera View in CoL in Chen & Peng 1993: 19 /1–5 (Lushui Reservoir). See A. setigera View in CoL section.

Alona fasciculata Daday, 1905 View in CoL s. str. Records: Chen et al. 1992: 90–91/5 (Jinan and Pingdu in Shandong); Tian 2004: 23 (Shandong). A. fasciculata View in CoL s. str. is likely a valid species (Van Damme et al. 2010) described from South America, and thus the status of Asian populations needs checking.

Alona quadrangularis (O. F. Müller, 1785) View in CoL s. lat. Records: Chiang 1955: 107/III: 26, 26a (Wuli Hu); Du & Lai 1958: 38 (Tai Hu); Du & Lai 1959: 310 (Tai Hu); Shen & Sung 1962: 37 (Sanmenxia Reservoir); Zhang 1962: 112 (Daming Hu); Deng et al. 1963: 144/11 (Poyang Hu); Wei 1963: 125 (Liuheta in Hangzhou); Du et al. 1964: 194 (Tai Hu); Chiang & Du 1979: 219–220/148 (a fish pond at Liyuan Park in Wuxi; provinces of Guangxi, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Shaanxi and Yunnan); Huang 1981: 46/24–25 (Chongqing, Yibin, Naxi); Jiang 1982: 179 (Lhasa); Jiang 1983: 446–447 (a ditch near Potala Palace); Zhao 1984: 114 (Shangcheng); Chen et al. 1989: 417 (Bijie and Zhenning in Guizhou); Mao 1993: 81 (Shandong); You & Xu 1993: 19 (Meihuashan Nature Reserve); Chen 1994: 169/1-1 (Lushui Reservoir); Peng 1994: 20 (Lushui Reservoir); Zhang et al. 1997c: 293/3 (a pond at Guixi County in Jiangxi Province); Xu et al. 1998: 9 (Fuzhou Area, Western and Northern Fujian); Tian, 2004: 23 (Shandong); Xiang 2009: 125–126/96–98 (Yibin, Chongqing and Chenglingji section of Yangtze River; Min Jiang, Tuo Jiang, Wu Jiang, Huangbai He, Yuan Shui, Gan Jiang; Hong Hu, Dong Hu in Wuhan, Poyang Hu, Wu Hu near Wuhan; a pond at Guixi County in Jiangxi Province); Xiang & Yu (unpubl. data: a stream in Luquan County, Yunnan Province; Lushui Reservoir). At least some of these populations belong to A. kotovi Sinev, 2012 View in CoL from Vietnam (Sinev 2012).

Alona setigera Brehm, 1913 View in CoL . Records: Peng 1994: 20 (Lushui Reservoir). Most probably, this determination refers to A. cambouei View in CoL or A. cheni View in CoL . A. setigera View in CoL s. str. is a taxon distributed in Australia, Tasmania, Indonesia ( Sinev 1999a) and Pacific islands ( Schabetsberger et al. 2009) that differs from other species of the costata View in CoL -group by the presence of two main head pores, not initially described by Brehm (1913). Smirnov (1983) allocated it to Biapertura for its two main head pores. Chen & Peng (1993) observed three connected main head pores, therefore their taxon was not setigera View in CoL , but most probably, A. cheni View in CoL . A. costata View in CoL and A. cheni View in CoL are very close, and it is impossible to separate them from each other without a study of head pores. We believe that A. setigera View in CoL is not present in China.

Alona virago Brehm, 1935 View in CoL . Records: Shen et al. 1964: 215–216/13–15 (a pond outside the Yongding Gate in Beijing); Shen & Sung 1965: 301 (Teyapu Hu; Nake Hu and its tributary and a nearby small lake, all in Tibet); cited by Chiang & Du 1979: 229 –230/158; Chen 1983: 23 (Yichang section of Yangtze River); Jiang 1983: 448 – 449 (Teyapu Hu and Nake Hu in Tibet); Chen 1985: 2 (Yichang section of Yangtze River); He & Fan 1986: 2 (Hong Hu); Zhao 1995: 101 (Xinxiang); Jiang 1982: 179 (Tibet); Xiang 2009: 131 /108–109 (Yichang and Wuhan section of Yangtze River; Chishui He, Huangbai He; Hong Hu); Xiang & Yu (unpubl. data: Dongqian Hu). Possibly a valid species (Van Damme et al. 2010).

Alona werestschagini Sinev, 1999 View in CoL . Records: as A. pulchella View in CoL in Chiang & Du 1979 (fig. 155) (Tibet); as Alonella rostrata in Chiang (1963, plate VI, fig 39–40) (Chinghai). A. werestschagini View in CoL is distributed in Pamir, Tibet and Altai mountains of Central Asia ( Sinev 1999b), to be expected in mountanous West China.

Anthalona lineolata ( Chen & Yi, 1991) . Records: as Alona verrucosa lineolata Chen & Yi 1991 View in CoL by Chen et al. 1991c: 87–88/1 (a small reservoir at Xian’e Village in Huarong County in Hunan Province). Status debatable, possibly a junior synonym of Antalona mediterranea (Yalim 2005) View in CoL (see Van Damme et al. 2010).

Anthalona verrucosa ( Sars, 1901) s. lat. Records: as Alona verrucosa Sars, 1901 in Shen & Zhang 1964: 130/6–9 (Baiyang Dian); Chiang & Du 1979: 221–222/150 (Baiyang Dian; Xiaosha He at Dengchuan County in Yunnan Province); Xu et al. 1998: 9 (Fuzhou Area). All these determinations need to be checked, since in Asia A. verrucosa is probably replaced by related species, viz.
