Range: The distribution of M. bombinus ranges throughout the Korean Peninsula and Jeju Island ( Son 2001; Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 ); it commonly inhabits volcanic caves on Jeju Island ( Jo et al. 2012).

Remarks: Previously, M. bombinus was considered a subspecies of M. nattereri ( Yoon 2010) . Based on mtDNA analysis, M. bombinus seemed more related to M. chinensis and clearly distinct from M. nattereri in Greece ( Kawai et al. 2003).

Conservation status: The IUCN Red List registered M. bombinus as ‘Near threatened’ ( Tsytsulina 2008). However, populations in Korea have rarely received consideration for protection.
