Taxonomy. Mazama bororo Duarte, 1996 View in CoL ,

Capao Bonito, Sao Paulo ( Brazil).

This species is monotypic.

Distribution. E Brazil (SE Sao Paulo State & NE Parana State), the smallest distribution of any Neotropical deer species. View Figure

Descriptive notes. Head-body 85 cm, tail estimated 11-14 cm, shoulder height 50-60 cm; weight 25 kg. It is a mediumsized brocket. The coat is mainly reddish, with a grayish neck. The base of the ear, the chin, the throat, and the belly are whitish. The hindlegs are blackish from the calcaneus to the hoof. The diploid number of chromosomes is 32.

Habitat. It lives in the remaining fragments of the Serra do Mar coastal Atlantic forest, from the coast up to 1200 m above sea level.

Food and Feeding. It feeds mainly on fruits, leaves, and sprouts.

Breeding. Mating may occur throughout the year. Most births occur between August and September, at the end of winter.

Activity patterns. It is crepuscular and nocturnal.

Movements, Home range and Social organization. Females seem to have home ranges of 10-50 ha. It is a solitary deer.

Status and Conservation. Classified as Vulnerable on The IUCN Red List. Habitat fragmentation and destruction are the main threats. The total population has been assessed at about 4500 individuals.
