1,2,3 Tamarix weyleri Pau in Mem. Real Soc. Esp. Hist. Nat. 12: 293 (1924a)

= Tamarix canariensis Willd.

( MA 78856 ! [http://colecciones.rjb.csic.es/#cardAdv.php?CatalogNumber=MA-01-00078856]) Notes:—Three specimens in Herb. MA collected by Pau in Tetuan were labelled as types by Byalt in 2005: MA 78856 !, which includes a mention to Río Martín but no date, is considered the holotype by this author; MA 78854 ! collected on 8 May, and MA 78855 ! collected on 15 May, are considered syntypes. Pau also sent a sample of his new species to Maire, which is preseved in MPU 008866 View Materials [photo!]. This piece includes a handwritten annotation by Pau himself with the name of the species and the locality (Tetuan), and also an indication of “fragmentum typi” on the label. The chosen lectotype is the only one of those specimens whose locality matches the protologue. The MA specimens were identified as T. canariensis by Cirujano in 1990.

Notes:—Recorded as “ Teucrium salviastrum subsp. rubriflorum Pau & Font Quer ” in Carrasco (1975). The GDA specimen was labelled as isolectotype by Vizoso in 2015. The specimen BC 98050 was identified as T. salviastrum subsp. afrum Emb. & Maire by Navarro in 1988, but in 1996 the same author identified BC 811287 View Materials as T. afrum subsp. rubriflorum .

2,3 Teucrium bracteatum var. virescens Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1928 nº 330 (1929), in sched., nom. nud.

Note:—The name was published without diagnosis or description.

1,2,3 Teucrium capitatum var. chamaedryfolium Pau & Font Quer in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1927 nº 517 (1928), in sched.

Teucrium polium L. subsp. polium

Ind. loc.:—“ Hab. in collibus argillosis littoris rhiphaei, pr. Marsa Saguira (Bocoya), 50 m. alt.; 8 majii” Lectotype (designated here):—In collibus argillosis littoris rhiphaei, pr. Marsa Saguira (Bocoya), 50 m, 8 May 1927, Font Quer 517-1927 (lectotype BCN 17156 View Materials ! [http://www.ub.edu/cedocbiv/herbarivirt/70217]; isolectotype GDA 32721 View Materials [photo]!, MPU 005220 View Materials [photo!], MPU 006399 View Materials [photo!])

Notes:—There are two gatherings labelled originally as var. chamaedryfolium in the exsiccata Iter Maroccanum 1927 : n. 517, collected on 8 May, with the diagnosis “ Folia latiora , alte crenata, corollis purpureis ”, and n. 518, collected on 7 May, only with the indication of “fma. foliis angustioribus ”. It is evident that only the former includes the description of the variety, while the latter would be a form of this variety with the leaves narrower than those of the typical plants. Navarro & El Oualidi (1997: 194) designated as lectotype the specimen BC 47270! corresponding to the gathering n. 518, which is also mentioned in the protologue; however, the transcription of the label rather matches the gathering 517. Therefore, since the variety is described only on the label of n. 517, this designation would not be correct, therefore the specimen of n. 517 with the biggest sample is selected as lectotype. The GDA specimen was labelled as isolectotype by Vizoso in 2015. After examination of the type material, it is confirmed that this variety has the diagnostic characters of T. polium , although APD (2020) includes it in T. capitatum L.

1,2,3 Teucrium chlorostachyum Pau & Font Quer in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1929 nº 370 (1930a), in sched.

Ind. loc.:—“Hab. in declivibus calc. montis Djebel Am-Zog (Kebdana), ad 600 m. alt.; 26 majii”

Lectotype (designated by Sauvage & Vindt 1967: 434):—In declivibus calc. montis Djebel Am-Zog (Kebdana), 600 m, 26 May 1929, Font Quer 370-1929 (lectotype RAB 61222 View Materials [photo!] [https://plants.jstor.org/stable/ history/10.5555/al.ap.specimen.rab061222]; isolectotypes BC 98115 !*, BCN 20117 View Materials [photo!], G 00424565 [photo!], GDA 32737 View Materials [photo!], MA 98446 !*, MPU 006660 View Materials [photo!]*, S-G 6059 [photo!])

Notes:—The GDA and MPU specimens were labelled as isolectotypes by Vizoso in 2015 and Mathez in 1993 respectively. The BC, MA, and MPU specimens were cited as isolectotypes by El Oualidi et al. (1997).

1 Teucrium fruticans var. minor Pau in Cavanillesia 1: 144 (1929a)

= Teucrium fruticans L.

Ind. loc.:—“Blocao del Martillo (MAS)”

Holotype:— Tetuan : Blocao del Martillo, Mas Guindal s.n. ( MA 99128 )

Note:—The specimen was identified as T. fruticans by Navarro in 2004.

1,2,3 Teucrium grosii Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1927 nº 515 (1928), in sched.

Ind. loc.:—“ Hab. in saxosis calcareis litoris rhiphaei, c. Marsa Saguira (Bocoya), 50 m. alt.; 11 majii” Lectotype (designated by El Oualidi & Navarro 1995: 259):—In saxosis calcareis litoris rhiphaei, c. Marsa Saguira (Bocoya), 50 m, 11 May 1927, Font Quer 515-1927 (lectotype BC 47407 ! AD)

Notes:—The GDA specimen was labelled as isolectotype by Vizoso in 2015. Dobignard (2009) cited as isotypes the MPU specimen and a sheet of his own personal herbarium. Determination of the ABH specimen was confirmed by Crespo in 1998, and of BC 811282 View Materials by Navarro in 1996.

1,2,3 Teucrium haenseleri var. rubrovirens Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1927 nº 516 (1928), in sched.

= Teucrium × rubrovirens Font Quer

Ind. loc.:—“ Hab. in declivibus calc. littoris rhiphaei, juxta Marsa Saguira (Bocoya), 50 m. alt.; 3 majii” Lectotype (designated by Navarro & El Oualidi 1997: 202):—In declivibus calc. littoris rhiphaei, juxta Marsa Saguira (Bocoya), 50 m, 3 May 1927, Font Quer 516-1927 (lectotype BC 47113 [https://www.ibb.csic.es/herbari/ JPEG / BC47113 .jpg]; isolectotypes BCN 18035 View Materials [photo!], GDA 32767 View Materials [photo!], MA 98404 !, MPU 006400 View Materials [photo!])

Notes:—This Teucrium L. involves an unusual case of the description of two taxa of different categories in the same publication and with the same name, due to a taxonomic disagreement between Pau and Font Quer. The first name on the label, in versals, corresponds to the variety of Pau, which is supplemented by a diagnosis focusing on the colour of the leaves and the corolla. Conversely, Font Quer considers the plant a hybrid between Teucrium capitatum var. chamaedryfolium and T. huotii Emb. & Maire. He names it T. × rubrovirens and adds a comparison between the hybrid and its parents just after the diagnosis by Pau. The BC and GDA specimens were labelled as lectotype and isolectotype by Navarro and Vizoso, in 1998 and 2015, respectively.Although Navarro & El Oualidi (1997) synonymized both names under T. grosii , according to El Oualidi (2007) and APD (2020) the hybrid of Font Quer should be accepted.

2,3 Teucrium oxylepis var. rhiphaeum Font Quer & Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1927 nº 512 (1928), in sched.

Teucrium afrum subsp. rhiphaeum (Font Quer & Pau) Castrov. & Bayon

Ind. loc.:—“Hab. in calumine montis Yebel Lerz, 2200 m. alt. (species c. alabastris), nec non in Yebel Tidiguin, 2000 m alt (sp. florif.), solo arenoso vel schistoso; alab. 12 junii, fl. 15 julii”

Lectotype (designated by Navarro & El Oualidi 1997: 191):—In calumine montis Yebel Lerz, nec non in Yebel Tidiguin, 2000–2200 m, buds 12 June 1927, fl. 15 July 1927, Font Quer 512-1927 (lectotype BC 47339 ! Notes:—The GDA specimen was labelled as isolectotype by Vizoso in 2016, and the MPU voucher as isotype by Schafer and El Oualidi in 1997. The BC sheet was identified as T. afrum subsp. rhiphaeum by Navarro in 1996. In APD (2020) this variety is attributed only to Font Quer.

1,2,3 Teucrium polium var. tetuanense Pau in Mem. Real Soc. Esp. Hist. Nat. 12: 379 (1924a)

= Teucrium polium L. subsp. polium

Ind. loc.:—“Yebel Dersa”

Lectotype (designated by Sauvage & Vindt 1967: 425):—Djebel Dersa, 10 Mayo 1921, Pau s.n. (lectotype MA 98549! [http://colecciones.rjb.csic.es/#cardAdv.php?CatalogNumber=MA-01-00098549]; isolectotype BC 47141!). Epitype (designated by Sauvage & Vindt 1967: 425): In declivibus calc. Montis Djebel Dersa, supra Tetauen, 250 m, 20 June 1930, Font Quer 547-1930 (epitype MA 98547; isoepitypes: BC 98046!*, MA 98549*, MPU 001279 [photo!])

Notes:— Pau (1924a) published this variety based on young plants, with the only indication that they were similar to T. haenseleri Boiss. (an endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula), but with broader leaves. Sauvage & Vindt (1967) did not consider this diagnosis sufficient and provided a description. Some years later, Navarro & El Oualidi (1997) cited this taxon as “ var. tetuanense Pau ex Sauvage & Vindt ”; however, this authority would seem inappropriate since Pau (1924a) had still provided a short, but valid, diagnosis. On the other hand, Sauvage & Vindt (1967) mention as type the MA 98549 specimen, collected by Pau in 1921. As the plants of this specimen are young, they propose a neotype collected in the same locality ( MA 98547) and distributed in Font Quer’s exsiccata Iter Maroccanum 1930 nº 547. According to Art. 9.8 ( Turland et al. 2018) this specimen should not be considered a neotype, but rather an epitype, since original material exists. Navarro & El Oualidi (1997) designated as lectotype the same specimen distributed in the Iter Maroccanum , but preserved in Herb. BC ( BC 98046); these authors also mention as isolectotypes two specimens of this exsiccata in Herb. MA. Following the criteria of Prado et al. (2015), the type proposal of Sauvage & Vind (1967) should be considered as an inadvertent lectotype designation, and therefore that of Navarro & El Oualidi (1997) is superfluous.

1,2,3 Teucrium resupinatum var. xauense Pau & Font Quer in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1928 nº 331 (1929), in sched.

= Teucrium resupinatum Desf.

Ind. loc.:—“ Hab. pr. Xauen, in incultis, 600 m. alt.; 23 juniii”

Notes:—The GDA specimen was labelled as isolectotype by Vizoso in 2015. The BC specimen was identified as T. resupinatum by Navarro in 1996.

1,2,3 Teucrium rotundifolium var. sanguisorbifolium Pau & Font Quer in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1930 nº 552 (1932), in sched.

Teucrium sanguisorbifolium (Pau & Font Quer) Dobignard

Ind. loc.:—“Hab. in rupibus calc. vallis Uad Lau, pr. Tirines, ad 50 m. alt.; 10 julii”

Lectotype (designated by Navarro & El Oualidi 1997: 200):—In rupibus calc. vallis Uad Lau, pr. Tirines, 50 m, 10 July 1930, Font Quer 552-1930 (lectotype BC 98052 ! Notes:—The GDA specimen was labelled as isolectotype by Vizoso in 2015. The BC specimen was identified as T. rotundifolium subsp. sanguisorbifolium (Pau & Font Quer) E.Cohen by Navarro in 1996. The G specimen was identified as T. huotii Emb. & Maire by Jacquemoud in 1996, but the bracts are not cordate at the base, as in this species.

1,2,3 Thymus ciliatus var. fumanifolius Pau in Font Quer, Bol. Soc. Esp. Hist. Nat. 16: 286 (1916)

= Thymus munbyanus Boiss. & Reut. subsp. munbyanus

Ind. loc.:—“Pau lo descubrió en Bu-guen-zen, el 3 de Mayo de 1910, y lo cree frecuente en las cercanías de Zeluán”

Lectotype (designated by Morales 1994:217):—Bugenzen, 9 May 1910, Pau s.n. ( MA 105600 ! [http://colecciones. rjb.csic.es/#cardAdv.php?CatalogNumber=MA-01-00105600])

Notes:—The specimen was labelled as lectotype by Morales in 1990, who identified it as T. hyemalis subsp. fumanifolius (Font Quer) R.Morales (synonym of T. munbyanus subsp. munbyanus ). Morales (1994) and APD (2020) ascribe the authority to “Pau ex Font Quer”, but in the protologue the description is attributed to Pau.

1 Thymus glandulosus f. festivus Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1927 nº 555 (1928), in sched., nom. nud.

= Thymus munbyanus Boiss. & Reut. subsp. munbyanus

Notes:— Carrasco (1975) cites this taxon as T. hyemalis f. festivus Pau , with the reference of Huguet del Villar (1933: 106); but in this publication the author only reviews the MA specimen of the exsiccatum ( MA 106451!), transcribes its label, and indicates that there are no differences with the typical form of T. glandulosus Req. It should be noted that the name of this forma is not in capital letters as other new formas of the Iter Maroccanum , and no description or diagnosis is included. This specimen was identified by Morales in 1990 as T. hyemalis subsp. fumanifolius (synonym of T. glandulosus auct. and T. munbyanus subsp. munbyanus ).

1,2,3 Thymus glandulosus var. maroccanus Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1930 nº 581 (1932), in sched., nom. illeg.

= Thymus munbyanus subsp. abylaeus (Font Quer & Maire) Greuter & Burdet

Notes:—The specimens distributed in the exsiccata Iter Maroccanum nº 581 are also original material of T. ciliatus subsp. abylaeus Font Quer & Maire published by Maire (1931: 311). According to Art. 52.1 ( Turland et al. 2018) the name proposed by Pau (in Font Quer 1932) (without description or diagnosis) should be considered illegitimate, because it includes the type of a previously published name.

1,2,3 Thymus munbyanus var. tetuanensis Pau in Mem. Real Soc. Esp. Hist. Nat. 12: 373 (1924a)

Thymus munbyanus Boiss. & Reut. subsp. munbyanus

Ind. loc.:—“Yebel Dersa”

Holotype:—Djebel Dersa: al pie, May 1921, Pau s.n. ( BC 77227 ! [https://www.ibb.csic.es/herbari/ JPEG / BC77227 .jpg])

Notes:— Carrasco (1975) records this variety under Thymus villosus L., which is mentioned as an alternative name in the protologue. Jahandiez & Maire (1941: 1118) subordinated the variety to T. ciliatus (Desf.) Benth. , a similar criterion to that of APD (2020), which synonymizes it under T. munbyanus subsp. ciliatus (Desf.) Greuter & Burdet. On the other hand, Tahiri et al. (2002) considered the name authored as “ (Pau) Mas Guindal ”, although Mas Guindal (1932: 37) merely mentioned the variety of Pau (1924a), and they synonymized it under T. munbyanus subsp. coloratus (Boiss. & Reut.) Greuter & Burdet. Having examined the type material, it is here referred to subsp. munbyanus , based on the glabrous leaves, wide green bracts, ovoid inflorescence, and corolla tube that is not longer than the calyx.

Notes:—The name of the variety was emended by Jahandiez & Maire (1934: 653) as “ afer ”, because the name Thymus L. is masculine in gender. The GDA specimen was labelled as syntype by Vizoso in 2013, and identified as T. afer (Pau & Font Quer) Villar by Socorro in 1981. The MA specimen was identified as T. willdenowii by Morales in 1987.

Notes:—The GDA specimen was labelled as syntype by Vizoso in 2013. The MPU and BC specimens were identified as Trifolium tastetii (Pau) Font Quer by Zohary and Devesa in 1976 and 1997, respectively. The MA specimen was identified as T. gemellum var. atlanticum (Ball) Maire by Devesa in 1997.

1,2,3 Trifolium viciosoanum Pau in Font Quer, Iter Marocc. 1929 nº 264 (1930a), in sched.

= Trifolium ochroleucon Huds.

Ind. loc.:—“Hab. in quercetis fagineae vallis Sgará (Ktama) ad 1500 m. alt., 30 junii”

Lectotype (designated here):—In quecetis fagineae vallis Sgará (Ktama), 1500 m, 30 June 1929, Font Quer 264-1929 (lectotype BC 802883 View Materials ! [https://www.ibb.csic.es/herbari/ JPEG / BC802883 View Materials .jpg]; isolectotypes BCN 72440 View Materials [photo!], G *, GDA 34923 View Materials [photo!], MA 64734 !, MPU 006672 View Materials [photo!], MPU 006673 View Materials [photo!], S-G 9340 [photo!], Z 000023809 [photo!])

Notes:—The MPU specimen was identified as T. ochroleucon by Zohary in 1976. Later, Dobignard (2009), and APD (2020) synonimized Pau’s species to T. ochroleucon ; Dobignard (2009) also mentions the G specimen as isotype. Other authors do not agree: Devesa identified the BC specimen as T. pannonicum Jacq. in 1997, and therefore he synonymized T. viciosoanum under this species ( Devesa 2002b). Trifolium ochroleucon and T. pannonicum differ by the length of the corolla and calyx tube and teeth; the study of the type material allowed the conclusion that the dimensions in T. viciosoanum fit within the variability range of T. ochroleucon .

= Valeriana tuberosa L. View in CoL

Ind. loc.:—“”

Type:—not traced

Notes:—This variety was described from plants collected by Vidal in the coastal region of Anyhera (nowadays Anjra) with ovate-orbiculate achenes. The only specimen of Valeriana L. collected by Vidal in this region ( BC 137864!) is from the mountains and its achenes do not differ from the typical forms of Valeriana tuberosa . Therefore, it is not considered as type material.

Notes:—Original determination of the specimen was confirmed by Paiva in 2005. Although the handwritten label by Pau states “ var. erecta ”, the author published it at the rank of forma. According to Maire (1931: 62), APD (2020) records this plant at varietal rank.

1 Veronica arvensis f. microcarpa Pau in Mem. Real Soc. Esp. Hist. Nat. 12: 370 (1924a)

= Veronica arvensis L.

Ind. loc.:—“Beni Hozmar”

Notes:—The variety was originally subordinated to subsp. dentata (F.W.Schmidt) Watzl , and lectotypified by Soriano & Ibáñez (2008) on the BC 45039 specimen. A superfluous lectotypification on the MA 112523 specimen was published by Andrés-Sánchez et al. (2009). Several isolectotypes are mentioned in this paper, which are indicated with * above; all of them were distributed in the exsiccata Iter Maroccanum 1927 nº 579. The GDA specimen was labelled as isolectotype by Vizoso in 2016. The MPU specimen was identified as V. rosea subsp. rosea by Soriano in 1996, and the G, GDA, and MA 112522 specimens as V. rosea by Martínez Ortega in 2004 ( G and GDA) and 2017 ( MA).
