DESCRIPTION. — Integument dark brown; scaling pale grey with subdued brown designs, designs more or less subfasciate on apical one-half or one-third of elytra; scales mostly ovate, contiguous, imbricate on a distinctly pale, more or less bell-shaped prescutellar patch and on flanks of prothorax.

Head convex in front, squamose, asperate with granules; smooth, minutely strigose patches small, two per side, usually not exposed unless rostrum tucked back underneath. Rostrum about 0.75 of length of prothorax, gently curved, coarsely punctate, in male also slightly asperate-rugose; prorostrum in male strongly transverse; rostrum in female shiny, finely punctate, sparsely squamose. Prothorax slightly broader than long, somewhat bell-shaped, usually subconstricted in front of basal angles, distinctly granulose except on densely squamose pale area, with a fine median carina at apex. Scutellum densely squamose.

Elytra granulose on all interstriae, with few larger granules on interstria 3 and 5. Prosternal process between coxae at least as wide as antennal club. Prosternum with shallow canal. First two ventrites impressed in both sexes, depression with fine erect hairs in male. Fore femora asperate on lower edge; hind femora strongly swollen, with large tooth, which extending distinctly beyond tip of elytra. Fore tibiae in male long, touching trochanter if folded, asperate apicad from basal one-third, with a tooth at this point; hind tibiae with sharp tooth on lower edge before apex. Fore tarsi in male long, slender, with a fringe of long white hairs segment 2 considerably longer than wide, much longer than 3.

Male: tergite 7 as in Fig. 183. Tegmen as in Fig. 182, with short, broad parameral sector, lobes fused. Aedeagus as in Fig. 181, parallel-sided, rolled over sides of pedon at least as broad as narrowest part of tectum; apodemes at least twice as long as body; internal sac with basal sclerite considerably longer than aedeagal body, with a pair of small median sclerites and ostial rods but no steering plate.

Length: 5.3-10.7 mm.

TYPE MATERIAL. — 1) Camptorhynchus ambiguus : 2 syntypes present. Lectotype female, 9.0 x 3.5 mm, ‘ 164/ Camptorhynchus ambiguus (mihi), Art’ [in Montrouzier’s writing], Coll. Fauvel, IRSN. Paralectotype male, Coll. Fauvel, IRSN. 2) Orthorhinus curvipes : 3 syntype present. Lectotype female, 11.0 x 4.2 mm, ‘ Orthorhinus curvipes Perroud /Montr., Jate, sud N. Cal.’ [in Perroud’s writing], Coll. Perroud, MNHN. Paralectotypes with IRSN. Identified non-type specimens with BPBM, IRSN, MNHN, MNHW, NHML, NZAC, QMBA, SRFP.

MATERIAL EXAMINED. — Belep Is: Art I. New Caledonia: Bourail, Chutes de la Madeleine, Col d’Amieu, Col des Roussettes , Forêt de Thy , Mt. Dore , Mt. Rembai, Pocquereux nr La Foa, Poro, SE Timbia (Ngoué), Yaté. Île des Pins. 48 specimens .

HOSTPLANTS. — Larva probably in wood of various dying and recently dead trees and shrubs, and adults feeding on same species.

ETYMOLOGY. — ‘Ambíguus’ for ambiguous, and ‘cúrvipes’ for bowed legs.

REMARKS. — Montrouzier thought that the species belonged to Cryptorhynchini owing to the presence of a rostral canal and wanted to place it in the known genus Camptorhinus but spelled it Camptorhynchus on oversight.
